Since Christmas vacation the swimming team has had only one meet and that proved to be an easy 59-36 victory for the visiting Harvards. The Indians had lost every event going into the 200-yard breaststroke and the relay when senior Hank Marshall came through with a record-breaking performance, eclipsing not only the pool record but also the College mark. His time of 2:26.4 in the breaststroke bettered the old College mark of 2:27.5 set by Terry Bentley in 1961.

The Dartmouth relay team of Carl Dußei, George Fesus, Ed Larner, and Chip Waite broke the pool record with a time of 3:30.5. It should be added that in the Harvard meet every pool record was broken, most of them, of course, by the Cantabs.

The Green continues to hurt in the backstroke, butterfly, and individual medley and now Coach Karl Michael has added the diving to his growing list of problems. Ace diver John Vanderveld, who would have undoubtedly been the best prospect, returned from Europe as expected at the end of the fall term, but announced that he planned to transfer to Stanford University. This puts the burden in the diving squarely on Randy Stayin, a senior from Philadelphia, and Forrest Martin, a junior, who is from Seattle, Wash. Neither man won a letter last winter, but should improve as the season progresses.

The swimming picture is indeed gloomy when it is considered that the Green's next meet is with Army, a team which has already beaten Harvard. Ccach Michael, however, has proven over the years that he can get the best out of a team, and we are sure that this will be the case this winter.
