The 100th anniversary of the founding of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston was celebrated the evening of January 22 at the Hotel Statler in Boston. All attendance records were broken by about 1500 alumni and ladies who gathered in honor of the occasion and to pay homage to Hoppy, the guest of honor. 1929 was represented at the head table by President John Dickey and Trustee Bill Andres. Seated around the '29 tables were Kay Andres, Fred Armstrong, Dick and Mary Barrett, Jack Blair, Johnnie and Virginia Davis. Art D'Elia, Chris Dickey, Ollie Holmes, Johnnie and Marion Hubbard, Mort and Peggy Jaquith, Johnnie and Alice Laffey, Larry and Mary Lougee, Loretta and Squeek Redding, Hank and Fay Stern, and Ken and Harriet Wilson. Looking down on us from the balcony was our eminent financier, BenStacey. We can only guess that Evelyn was present. We hope it is a good guess. This was a jovial, happy group of Twenty Niners. Ollie Holmes added to the merriment with a large cake which he baked in the kitchen of Schrafft's. It was splendiferous in its garment of white frosting bearing the famous green numerals and green Wah- Hoo-Wah. This regal appearing creation bedecked our table during the festival of "operating chicken," awaiting patiently the amenity of "her" escort. Finally, he arose to the occasion and presented "her" to the guest of honor with all due flourishes. Hoppy was quite taken aback by the sudden appearance of this beauty. "What shall I do with it?" he asked. We can only guess that Ollie answered, "Eat it," because Hoppy's eyes danced as his face became wreathed in smiles. The "queen" was then passed graciously from end to end of the head table to the edification of all present. We are certain that they were well instructed in the presence of this great Class and thereby uplifted spiritually as well as morally and gastronomically.
Holmes the Operator also corralled a Herald-Traveler photographer to the further edification of metropolitan Boston. The next day everybody knew that Twenty-Niners were very important people. It was all good fun and we thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship the songs of the Glee Club, and the stirring addresses of John Dickey, Nels Rockefeller '30, and Scott Creelman '64. We are pleased to note the presence of Jim Cornehlsen, son of Johnnie, among the wonderful Glee Clubbers.
Hank Stein reminded us again of the widespread fraternity that is ours as he related his experience at the Pan-Am Clipper Club in London this past fall. He and Fay were sitting quietly and lonely, awaiting a flight to Boston. A strange but somewhat familiar figure appeared and accosted him with the question. "I know you, do I not?" Sure enough. It was Woody Woodbridge, who had just arrived from Turkey with Janet, his bride of 27 years. And so Hank and Fay and Woody and Janet renewed acquaintance in London.
One evening in January, we attended the annual dinner meeting of the Middlesex County National Bank at Tufts College. We were surprised and delighted when the toastmaster introduced the principal speaker. It was none other than the eminent financier and economist, Ben Stacey. He presented us with a thoughtful and interesting prognosis of the business climate in New England, and fielded all questions in the manner of a real professional.
Dud and Jean Orr have announced the engagement of their daughter, Carolyn, to Mr. Robert Howard Mattoon Jr., of New Orleans, La. Carolyn was graduated from Wellesley College with honors in 1963. Bob Monahan has announced his intention to enter the March 10 Presidential Primary as a delegate from the Second Congressional District of New Hampshire favorable to Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller. Bob is convinced that Rocky is the best qualified candidate because of his lengthy experience at State and Federal levels of our government. His political ambition of the moment is "to help unlatch the door of the White House" for "Rocky" in 1965.
