As new officers of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Cleveland prepare to assume office at the annual dinner this month, club members can review with pleasure other of the year's activities under President Waldemar Meckes, Jr. '42.
The Dartmouth Glee Club sang for a record crowd at Shaker Heights High School on Sunday, 22 March 1964. This concert, the third Sunday appearance in Cleveland of our Glee Club, was ably propelled to success by Ed Oberndorf '52. Dartmouth alumni, never bashful about enjoying themselves at the many stag events during the year, were encouraged by Ed to make the concert a family affair. Special prices for children, the handy Sunday afternoon hour and that inevitable Dartmouth spirit all did their part in adding hundreds of wives, children, girl friends, and students to the crowd Among those helping make the concert a success were ticket maestro George Kingsley'54, and Jim Fanner '50, who gathered a hospitable horde of Cleveland alumni families to entertain the Glee Club men overnight after the concert.
On Wednesday, 26 February 1964, President John Sloan Dickey visited Cleveland. He spoke to a crowd of some 50 class agents at a University Club dinner, welcoming some of them from as far away as Ann Arbor, Mich. Sipping and supping arrangements for the group were made by BillSteck '31. President Dickey proudly told the audience of the growing use being made of Dartmouth's academic facilities during the summer months, a period some of us used to regard as "vacation"!
Of special pride to Clevelanders at the dinner was the presentation of the Dartmouth Alumni Award to Charles M. French '24. The award was made to Charlie by N. Page Worthington '33, president of the Alumni Council. It read, in part:
"We would like to testify to the rugged qualities that you exhibit as a sturdy son of Eleazar who continues to enjoy skiing, horseback riding, and many other outdoor activities defying blizzards, fair or foul weather, and advancing years.
"For all of your distinctions in serving Dartmouth, and for other aspects of your career, we are pleased to present you with the Dartmouth Alumni Award."
