Nice thing about this job is the annual enticement to Hanover for the Class Officers' meeting. One sure way of returning to Hanover is to have someone like Sid Hayward say be there. Highlights included the Hopkins Center dedication of a memorial tablet to all Dartmouth men lost in World War II and Korea. Bus Mosbacher and President Dickey spoke tenderly of these men and the meaning of their sacrifices. Many '43 s on this tablet — and sadly remembered by all who knew them.
Regularly I've been crowing about '43 on the upswing. More proof? George Munroe was awarded the Harvey P. Hood plaque for outstanding class agent (for classes out of college between 11 years and 25 years) in last year's Alumni Fund campaign. George couldn't make it to accept personally, but Jack Meleney, Bus and I stuck out chests for this deserved recognition. Incidentally, get your contribution in to this year's Fund - no resting on last year's laurels.
Jack Meleney and Bud Hall have organized an outstanding reunion program. Plenty of scheduled activities with ample leisure time for revisiting old friends and familiar places. Charlie Tanzi personally told me he was looking forward to '43's return the old town hasn't been the same since we left. Jack Meleney did agree that the Nugget showing something like "Hud" to college boys was a far cry from the Ma and Pa Kettle - Andy Hardy series of our day. The reunion is about on us. What must we do to get you back?
Dick Reid is Dom Benedict, a Benedictine monk of the Episcopal Church, St. Gregory's Priory, Three Rivers, Mich. He writes, "Perhaps classmates would like to know that one of their number is engaged in prayer - anytime they wish to plug in." Dick is superior of this monastery and will welcome any help with their mortgages and building program. Dick originally came from California, and if I recall correctly, had an early exposure to the realities of life rooming next to Ambrose Broughton and Bob Mara. MooseKearney, Hacker Daniels, Harry Glynne, and Johnny Krol found their room a friendly gathering place to discuss the current great issues. The only other celibate classmate I know in religious orders is JimMalley, a Jesuit.
During the Hanover weekend a tragic automobile accident involving Dartmouth and Colby Jr. College students reminded me that Bruce Cunningham was lost in our time in a similar road accident. Bruce came from Deal, N. J., and he used to sing a song with the tag line "There's no deal like our Deal!" We ran the college magazine agency together, and I remember what a charming guy he was - full of personality and energy.
Roger Thomas has left the Ingraham Company of Bristol, Conn., where he was national sales manager, consumer products for this manufacturer of clocks, watches, and timing devices. He is now associated as a life underwriter with the Willard H. Griffin Agency in Hartford, the general agency in Connecticut for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance.
Perhaps BUI Schumacher should talk to us at reunion. His recent address before a Parent-Teachers Association in Maine was titled "The Three P's of Teen-Agers - Parking, Petting, Problems." Bill, you could add a fourth P - Parents. Bill is director, Bureau of Mental Health, Department of Mental Health and Corrections, State of Maine.
Mel Fenichell, a look-alike for Nelson Rockefeller in the Darien paper, has been named a general partner, Eastman Dillon Union Securities and Co., investment bankers and brokers. His base is One Chase Manhattan Plaza, New York City. Previous to Eastman Dillon, Mel was supervisor of oil and gas investments, New York Life Insurance Co. and at one time was associated with Standard Oil of New Jersey in geological exploration in Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela. Mel took his law degree from George Washington University Law School in 1952. He lives in Darien with his wife and two children.
Bob Gray of Washington really gets around. First it's a postcard from the Orient, now it's a Navy PR release stating that Bob took two weeks' active duty with Fleet Tactical Air Transport Squadron 661 at the Naval Station, Rota, Spain. I hope he'll stay home long enough to bring his charming Susy and family to Hanover for the reunion. Bob is partner in the Washington law firm of Chapman, Walsh and O'Connell.
See you in Hanover for the tremendous Twentieth - June 18-21. No excuses accepted!
