All right, you '62s, let's get right down to the problem at hand. The 1964 Alumni Fund campaign is fast drawing to a close and the Class is showing up much more poorly than we should. As of the latest tabulations we've had less than one-sixth of our number who have taken the time to get off their duffs and give according to their ability. Has the Dartmouth experience meant absolutely nothing to the other five-sixths? I find that hard to believe. In comparison with the seven youngest classes we are running next to the last in participation. And that doesn't sound like the Class of 1962 I knew. 1961 is in second place and we know that we can do at least as well as those old men can. So let's get it up for the Alumni Fund.
This month's notes are in a slightly more confused state than usual as yours truly has just returned from the wild Midwest to the civilized East, with letters and news clippings suffering from a hasty departure. With that excuse for this month we begin.
John Wilkinson writes us on the stationery of the West Lake Branch of the Minneapolis YMCA where he is a program secretary. His proud achievements are topped by a YMCA ski program, consisting of lessons and ski trips which John modestly (?) describes as "destined to be one of the largest in the Twin Cities." These activities haven't kept him from making some of his own ski trips, including some serious skiing in Colorado. Writes the Beaver: "I was happy and quite surprised to run into ski-patrolee-at-Arapahoe, Bill Bassett and ski-instructor-sometimes-real-estate-agent-at-V ail, GeorgeRau. There is a real sense of satisfaction, of deep appreciation when, as I did, one runs into classmates and is accepted as a brother, as a brother in the greatest fraternity in the world."
Maybe Yale Law School really isn't as tough as they say. Student Jeff Reinert appeared on the TV program "Password" on March 12 with Rosemary Clooney as his partner. The effort netted Jeff a cool $500, good news to wife Judy. A news quickie: a boy, Eric Ward, to Mr. and Mrs. Kit Nissen of Norwich, Vt., on March 25.
Congratulations to Gene and Sandy Gasbarro on the birth of son Eric Eugene on April 3, weighing in at six pounds, five ounces.
A letter from Boulder, Colo., brings us up to date on the doings of Dave Laing. Married on May 25, 1962 to Miss Jennifer Stewart of Boulder, Dave is already the father of one girl, Robin Dilys, and is awaiting another addition to the family this summer. He is doing postgraduate groundwork in Chinese language as a preparation for work at Harvard in Far Eastern Languages and Literature, and neglected to tell us (although we still found out) that he has been named to the superior list at Colorado University.
Studying at Harvard Business School is Wes Guylay. The work load hasn't been so great, however, that Wes couldn't enjoy the Dartmouth-Harvard weekend this past fall. Adding to the motivation in Cambridge is the recent announcement of his engagement to Miss Terry Triest of Lake Success, N. Y., and a Vassar '63. Terry will receive her Mrs. degree this summer.
From Jim and Jan Murar comes the good word that Jim is now officially a C.P.A. California-style. Also, another Dartmouth wedding on February 9, 1964, of Jim's little sister (I bet she hates to be called that) Emmy to fraternity brother Dave Walsh. Further words from Jim: "I called Carl (Julio) Jaeger in New York the other night and it seems I interrupted an old Dartmouth party. From what I could make out from old Jaegs .. . they were having a real blast. He kept mumbling something about a half keg and they just couldn't finish it. Doesn't sound like the old days - a half keg was nothing. I guess some of the participants in the affair were Mike Jackson (rooming with Carl), Dave Gundy, Jim Walquist, MikeRouze and wife Debbi."
King Embry has been appointed sales representative of Embry Brothers, Inc., distributors of construction and industrial equipment. His territory includes much of south central and western Kentucky.
News from the services tells us that Army First Lt. Everett S. McCassey has completed a combat arms communication course at the U.S. Army School, Europe, in Lenggries, Germany. First Lieutenant Dick Maynard was recently returned to Fort Dix, N. J., after a stay with the First Battalion, 17th Cavalry, stationed in Korea. While in Korea Dick served as adjutant of his battalion, teaching a school of twenty students. And presently serving at Fort Devens, Mass., is Lieutenant Carl Funke. Carl is a platoon leader with the sth Infantry Division.
Ensign Dave French has found '62s even while cruising around the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. He writes of seeing Mike Parrish and Tom Yasuda. While in Hong Kong he saw Mike and Heath Coffieid, Frank Kehl, and Pete Suttmeier '63 and wife, all of whom are teaching at Chung Chi College. Heath, Mike, and Frank are due to return to this country shortly. Mike plans to join our Dartmouth contingent at Michigan Law School. Dave's fine letter will be forwarded to Al Rapoport for the Class Newsletter, but I would like to mention one point which Dave makes and which I have heard from a number of the men in the Orient. All of the men out there know there are a great many of Dartmouth's fabulous '62s in the general area, but they are hindered by a lack of addresses. If some of you guys will write to Al Rapoport, giving your service addresses and locations, perhaps the newsletter could make it easier for you to get together for informal reunions.
Your rapidly balding Class Secretary is pleased to announce his promotion in the University of Michigan Residence Halls System to the job of Resident Advisor of Anderson House, East Quadrangle for the coming academic year. I promise that there will be 128 undergraduates cheering for the Big Green team next fall. Can anyone else do better? And speaking of doing better, don't forget the Alumni Fund. The deadline is June 30.
