Welcome back to Alumni-Land. This year we promise to do our best to convince you that you belong in Hanover on June 17-18-19 when the '62s will be back together again en masse for the first time since June 10, 1962. With Dick Hofmann as our Reunion Chairman it promises to be quite a time.
Class Secretaries have nightmares from time to time, and one of mine came true. To set the record straight, and to offer my public apologies, let it be known that, contrary to the December 1964 issue of these Class Notes, Bill Foss is not, I repeat, not married. I imagine that one is not a seasoned Class Secretary until he has committed such a blunder, but I would have been much happier had it not happened.
Three years that the '62s have been out of Dartmouth, so naturally we're beginning to hear about many of the advanced degrees earned by our classmates. Bill McDonald graduated from Boston College Law School where he was a two-year member of the Law Review and president of his senior class. Bill now begins work for the National Labor Relations Board in Los Angeles. Receiving law degrees also were Mike Slive,John Walters, and Bill Hayes from the University of Virginia. Receiving M.A. degrees from Brown University were Pete Morrison, in Sociology, and Nelson Orringer, in Spanish. Pete's thesis was on "The Stability of Internal Migration Streams: a Mathematical Model," and Nelson's, "Rhythm and Pace in Pre-Ad venture Dialogue between Don Quixote and Sancho." Allen Hill received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and Bob Brodkey was awarded Princeton's Master in Public Affairs degree. Wes Guylay, now with Morgan Guaranty in N.Y.C., graduated from Harvard Business School.
Ohio State University handed out degrees to a couple of '62s. Bill Rice got his LL.B. there, and John Schwarzell his M.D. Continuing with his studies is Dave LaPonsie who has been accepted to study for his Doctorate in Twentieth Century American Diplomatic History at Tufts University. Dave got his Master's at Wesleyan University in 1964, and in the year since has served as an instructor of retarded children at the Middletown, Conn., Valley Hospital. DonBerry has been awarded an NDEA Aid award in the field of statistics to continue his education at Yale University.
From Fairleigh Dickinson University comes word that Stu Heydt is now a D.D.S. Stu, who left Dartmouth after three years to begin his dental studies, is married and the father of a son, Geoffrey. He plans to go into practice in the northern part of New Jersey. (Also down at Fairleigh Dickinson School of Dentistry is Dusty Rhodes, going into his third year.)
A couple of Harvard Med graduates have been reported in as starting their internships. Russ Hardy is at Boston City Hospital (Harvard service) and Frank DeGiacomo is at Bellevue Hospital (New York University service). Dr. Roy Abbanat is one of 16 new physicians accepted to serve as an intern at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital. Roy is a graduate of Dartmouth Med and University of California Med. Beginning his internship on June 18 at Philadelphia General Hospital was Dr. Jim Sammarco, after receiving his medical degree from Tulane University. The newspaper clipping I received filled me in with a little news about Jim which he had not told us about previously. In 1963 he was one of four students chosen to spend the summer at medical research on tuberculosis in Colombia, South America, under the sponsorship of the International Center of Medical Research and Training. And this past May he delivered a learned paper to the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons at their convention in Point Clear, Alabama.
Although I have the highest respect for all the advanced degrees and other marks of achievement being earned by our classmates, I nonetheless could not help but take special note of the first news clippings giving a special title to one of our number. Rev. PhilO'Hara filled the pulpit this summer at the Mendon, Vt., Community Church. Phil graduated from Drew University School of Theology in June, where he was elected by the faculty to receive the Clarence Tucker Craig Prize in Biblical Studies. Phil is now studying in Germany and plans to continue in the active ministry. As Drew is Methodist-sponsored I assume that that is the denomination in which Phil was ordained.
On May 25 it was a son, William Allen, for Fran and Dick Zartler down at Lake Jackson, Texas. And five days later a daughter, Pamela Telos, was born to Mr. andMrs. Dick Whitfield at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital.
A letter from Day Mount informed us of his return to civilian life and job hunting in the Northeast. Day spent his three years in the Army Security Agency, a branch of Army Intelligence, and for the last two years was in Bavaria, not far from Munich. I'm sure there must be some interesting tales of the Oktoberfest and fasching not included in your letter, Day.
After two years with IBM Ron Tagney has decided to join the world of educators. Tag will be teaching social studies at the Greater Lawrence (Mass.) Regional Vocational Technical High School. He received his M.A. in history from Boston University in 1963.
Quote of the month lifted from a letter from Dave Usher in Viet Nam: "I haven't run into any Dartmouth grads as of yet, however the first shots that were fired at me were from a Yalie. He was a tank platoon commander and mistook me and a couple of other Marines for VC as we were coming in off a patrol at night. He opened up on us with the tank's 50 cal. machine gun and needless to say scared the heck out of me. Talk about carrying that Ivy League rivalry to extremes!" (Just wait until the middle of the football season, Dave.)
The 21 weddings I've got to report will have to wait until next month, as I can see the editor's Crosby Hall scissors heading this way. See you you next mo - (snip-snip)
