PROF. WALTER H. STOCKMAYER of the Chemistry Department has won the American Chemical Society Award in Polymer Chemistry. The award was announced at the Society's 150th national meeting at Atlantic City last month.
The award, which carries a $1500 stipend, is sponsored by the Witco Chemical Company Foundation of New York. It was given to Professor Stockmayer for his studies of the size and shape of polymer molecules which make up materials such as plastics, rubber, and nylon. His theories on the dimensions of polymers containing long branches and polymers "cross-linked" with each other have provided a basis for nearly all subsequent investigations of the properties of such molecules.
The award citation said: "He has scattered ideas among polymer chemists throughout the country. His published work is as a whole only the visible part of an iceberg." The award will be presented to Professor Stockmayer next spring at the Society's 151st national meeting in Pittsburgh.
