A letter and report from Ford H. Whelden '25, executive secretary of Dartmouth Bequest and Estate Planning Program, to Ned Kenerson has reached me. You probably have received through a special News Letter, word of gifts by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cohen and by Ned. Mr. Whelden adds that Ned's recent life insurance trust gift, Kid's bequest, Mrs. Cohen's gift to the Arthur Cohen Jr. 1937 Memorial Fund, bring 1903's total known giving to Dartmouth to over $1,700,000. The Class of 1903 remains one of the top five classes in total known giving to the College.
A special article in a recent Wall Street Journal told of several large private colleges that had not been able to meet the gap between income and increasing expenses and were turning to their home states for public aid. In the case of one large institution the gap was 12% — this is the same percentage on which the goal was set for the '65 Dartmouth Alumni Fund Campaign and which gap was closed by alumni and family giving.
Our class fiscal year has recently been from July 1 through June 30. This to fit in with our savings account interest credits at Dec. 31 and June 30. The bank has just increased its rate which will be credited quarterly at close of March, June, September, and December. As at last June 30, the cash balance was $988.10. The increase of $52.67 since June 30, 1964 was derived in large measure, $33.17 from bank interest. The collection of 1965 dues closes Dec. 31 so please help Mrs. Starzyk, now our very competent Office Manager. With your prompt remittance she can do even better than perfect.
Just recently received notice from Hanover of the death in 1959 of James B. Cresswell at Lakewood, Calif. I have written his son at Lakewood where he apparently lived and will try to give you more details when I hear from the son. Jim was a busy and popular member of the class at Hanover and his work after graduation led him into many parts of the West and Southwest.
Had a very brief but good visit with Charlotte and Ned Kenerson at the University of New Hampshire game. They each look in the peak of good health.
From "Notable and Quotable" - Wall Street Journal: "A retired acquaintance says the trouble with getting old is that as much as he would like to, he doesn't feel physically able to slug everybody who calls him a 'Senior Citizen'."
