I find it hard to muster a great deal of cheer with the rigors of winter so soon upon us, but all the good news I've received in the past month should help some. Also the memories of a fruitful Saturday just past at the Yale Bowl should serve to warm some of those cold blasts which are surely on the way.
We saw most of the usual gang up there, including Jock McClintock. It's getting to be an annual affair with me greeting Jock in the aisles of the Bowl, but this year I didn't ask him, "How's everything in Illinois?" This year I knew he came all the way from Indiana. And alongside him was HowieWhitaker a stalwart member of that remarkable Alumni Fund regional team of agents known jocularly as "the Blakemore group" which astounded no one by ending up in the middle in John Klein's '52 derby. Howie was rightfully making a few prideful remarks about landing one particularly tough customer this year for the first time in years. It's financial spirit like this that gives our class that ineffable quality we're noted for.
And as I said, the news this month is all good. First of all, our practically new Newsletter Editor John Barto is also the practically new president of the Dartmouth Club Officers Association. I suspect he's too modest to tell you that in his own stirring letters which we've all, I'm sure, been pleased with of late.
Another item which is far overdue thanks to an oversight by your correspondent was once again called to my attention this past month: Dr. George Howard has hung out his shingle at the Institute of Ophthalmology, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, in New York. In addition to his practice in ophthalmology, George is also serving as eye pathologist for the Institute. George had spent nine years in medical training before going into practice and he and his wife and daughter are living in New York.
From Syracuse, N. Y., comes news that classmate Thurston Egbert Jr. has been named manager of press relations for General Electric's Consumer Electronics Di- vision. This is the division that makes all the TV's and radios. Before his new appointment, Thurston was account supervisor in the company's News Bureau in Schenectady, N. Y. He joined G.E. in 1960 and before that he was a reporter for the "Herald News," the newspaper in his hometown, Passaic, N. J. He and his wife, Barbara, have three children, all of whom I trust they have now transported to Syracuse.
Just a few miles up the road here in Stamford, Conn., Pitney-Bowes, Inc. has passed out the news that Tom Loemker has been appointed manager of the new department of business development. Tom joined Pitney-Bowes in 1955 and has avoided the commute on the sporadic New Haven RR by settling in Stamford, home of Pitney-Bowes.
And you know how I always told you you could count on E. K. Calhoun for news. Well, I was right. Of course it took me over three years to prove I was right, but the letter that vindicated my judgment arrived today. Cal, as you will recall, was recently married and I think Charlotte has pressed him into writing his old buddies. That, plus the fact that he had some good news about someone else in the class, turned the trick. He wrote to inform me that his associate at Ryerson Steel, John Brower, has just been promoted to Product Manager of cold finish bars, alloy products and tubing. He didn't say whether this meant a move back to Chicago for John and Jan but sounds like maybe it does to me.
One guy who can apparently keep straight all those numbers by which we're rapidly parcelling off our lives is none other than old area code 617, No. 427-8545, Zip 247006, who used to be plain old Deke Emmons. At least you should hope he can keep them straight if you live in the Dorchester-Roxbury district in Massa chusetts, for Deke is the new district traffic superintendent for New England Telephone Company in that district. Deke moved there from Springfield where he'd been traffic manager. He started with New England Telephone in 1954 and besides learning all about numerical dialing and such, he's also learned how to get four children — with some help from his wife, Barbara. (Please don't try to call him on the number listed above. I'm not so good with figures myself and I may have transposed a few digits.)
If you're in the market for recreational products I should think you ought to be able to get a fairly good deal from the Martin Reel Company. George Pandaleon has just joined them as vice president in charge of marketing and, according to my correspondence, Maury Lyon is also a member of that company's top management, though I was not given Maury's title. The only other class that could possibly have an edge on us would be the Class of '22. Al Lyon, president of the company and the gentleman who informed me of George's new appointment, is a member of that class.
Two notes from the field of education this month. First, new honors for Doc Dey (Dr. Charles F. Dey, I suppose I should call him) Associate Dean of the College. Doc received a citation award from Williston Academy for significant contributions to secondary education in the U.S. at the Academy's Fourth Annual National Education Conference.
And the Mary A. Burnham School in Northampton, Mass., has announced the appointment of William W. Biddle to the newly established position of assistant principal. Bill taught formerly at the Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Mass., and while there organized that school's Outing Club. Bill and his wife, Barbara, have moved with their two boys, Robert and Eddie, to Northampton.
And speaking of boys, there's a new one in the Bill Kay household. Fairly new anyway. William G. Jr. arrived August 16 and he'll have to fight his way up to manhood because he comes along fairly shortly after son number one, who, if any memory is what I hope, is still less than two years old.
By the time you read this I'm sure you'll be in the Holiday spirit, but if you're not maybe you'll be able to read it all the way through without blurring.
If it goes badly get out and try to walk the line on the highway! And in any event have a very kicky Yule and we'll get back together next year.
