Christmas being what it is (just after which this is being written), you gotta make allowances! Luckily, it comes before New Year's!

Which brings up this thought. Whoever said "Education is what folks have left after forgetting part of what they learned" said a mouthful! , ,

Messages from, and about, the '15 clan are as variable as the weather. Chink Chamberlain tells of a nice visit early in December with the Herb Potters' charming daughter Julie up in the Boston area. Both the Potters and the Chamberlains expect to make it to Hanover for Fifteen's Fiftieth in June. Herb says he has to wangle time off from the Court of Appeals which is in session at that time. Bob Fredericks phones in "just to hear my voice" and ask a couple of questions which I answered, but which had already been answered in a previous column. When I suggested he read these columns, he "took it in stride." Walter Wanger was spotted with his beautiful sister-in-law, Connie Bennett, at the famous El Morocco gala affair some time ago. (Sorry I couldn't make it.) The Don Benninks shared their Thanksgiving "bird" with the Eben Cloughs and it is understood all were brought up to date on all subjects pertaining to politics, gardening, taxes, and the like. Don and Fan were scheduled for a Florida trip in the spring, after which their eyes were on Hanover for the big June affair. Don had previously upheld the family honor with a two-day nine-to-nine stint as Junior Warden at their Church Fair. The Cloughs dropped in on the Sid Crawfords at Kennebunk along mid-December and Eben exclaims over Sid's over-all healthy physique. Somewhere along the line, the Dale Barkers were drawn into the picture and, as near as I can figure out from Eben's account, they spent the day with Chan Foster and family. Whether all this was one occasion, or several, is slightly ambiguous. Anyway, it was pin-pointed that a goodly crowd gathered at Purcell's eatery for the weekly luncheon on December 9 at which were present Dale Barker, EbenClough, Nut Norwood, Pen Aborn '14, Salty Saltmarsh '14, Carl Shumway '13, and Warde Wilkins '13.

A later missive from Sid Crawford encloses a news clipping of a swim-clad beauty (mostly without) which he labels a preview of what's in store for the beachcombers at Kennebunk Beach next summer and asks "what do you do besides swim?" He adds "The welcome sign is always out at the Crawford house."

Further jottings: Dan Daniell, out in the Wisconsin home of that fabulous 17-ton Big Cheese, reports that his daughter with her own 4-year-old, in the excitement of opening Christmas presents, says: "Daddy, you're worse than the children." She and her husband, visiting the World's Fair, sent him a snapshot, saying "Here's a picture of Your Big Cheese." The Dick Wymans plan on seeing us all in June. The Howie Fullers were off in January on a voyage to South America, Africa, and Southern Europe - back in time for that June Hanover affair. Harry Ellms credits me with a successful fourth-down-and-three-to-go effort (past history). Ray White says he's still selling 2x4's to the trade but cut some other time-consuming jobs. The Gus Brauns offer a "Prosit" from their new location in New Jersey. The Ralph Browns, after Thanksgiving in Virginia with their oldest son and family, returned to find their Riding Ridge Farm in Maine buried under 5 heavy snowfalls within 7 days—almost more than an entire winter some years. Ruth Winship is quite justifiably "set-up" over the election of her grandson (Ad Winship's son Peter) as captain of Hanover High '65 football team. After the holidays in Hanover, Ruth was headed for a sojourn in Atlanta for February and March. Indicative is the signature on the Kike 'n' Pearl Richardson card "Bizzy Tizzy." After umpty-ump years downtown, Sammy Sanborn is moving his law office uptown to 277 Park Ave. in New York. "Never a dull moment," says Sammy, "think I'll retire!" .

We are sorry to report the passing of Dick (Dutch) Scharmann in a New Jersey hospital where he had gone for a routine check-up in November. Our deep sympathy is extended to Marjorie and the family.

Joe Harris is still enjoying the climate in San Diego. Says forgetting seems easy to do lately. (Don't we all?) A Chinese card from Kay Mason has me guessing! The Art Sterlings' Yuletide Family Tree was indeed something! Shall we hold it for a "fill-in on that space marked "Reserved for new arrival"? A phone from Carl Gish reports a good visit with the Harry Ellms in Denver. Carl says he's working on Harry for Reunion. And a phone from Roy Lafferty reports a houseful of family, kids, etc. for Christmas. He also dropped a hint as to our official alumni speaker at Reunion, but I'll leave that for the official announcement.

That was quite a trip revealed by the Marv Fredericks in their 1964 travelogue. I was particularly interested in those four-and-one-half-pound rainbow trout - seventeen of them - they caught. Knowing Marv, I'll take it as gospel, but why don't they grow that kind of trout around these parts!

So — with February pushing on into March, let's hope for an early spring and a gentle reminder that this generation is no worse than any other, it just don't bother to pull the shades down!
