Golf weather here at last... disappointing to you winter fans like Fred Stockwell or Jim Capps who would jump an ocean for quick schuss. Keep the winter of 1976 open, men, because the winter Olympics may be held in New England, if the original idea of John O'Brien of the New England Council continues to catch on. Committees have already been formed, and Congressional support generated. New Englanders recognize a good idea when they see it.
Don Reich made a large corporate jump from vice president international operations, Eltra Corporation to vice president and secretary, Air Reduction Company. Air Reduction, very large producer of industrial gases and allied products, is headquartered in midtown Manhattan. Last several years Don has been traveling abroad constantly. Connie and he live in Brooklyn and spend summers at Fire Island. Don got his early business training working for Mrs. Hayward in Thayer Hall as impresario of the steam table.
The political bug really nibbles at this class. John Altorfer is one of the most effective speakers among GOP top brass, reports the North Chicago Tribune, when John addressed the annual Lincoln Day Banquet of the Waukegan Young Republicans. John ran up an impressive vote last fall as Republican candidate of Illinois Lt. Gov., carrying 20 counties.... And Bill Seidman serves as Governor Romney's financial and economic adviser with additional duty as Chairman of 1965 Michigan Week Business and Products Board. ... And in our own Pennsylvania Charlie Dorkey jumps into Main Line politics with a strong Republican bid for Lower Merion Township Commissioner, in the May primary. Charlie stole the show on the other candidates by getting the incumbent commissioner's endorsement (a 20-year man) since winning the primary means election in this predominantly Republican district where Democrats are outvoted 5-1. Charlie really has been very active in the community with a busy business career as vice president of Frankoweave, Inc., a Philadelphia textile concern. Peggy Dorkey is his campaign manager supported by the Dorkey sons. Next move is Harrisburg, Charlie. Scranton, watch that boy!
Ironical that the March ALUMNI MAGAZINE featured Japanese alumni and particularly Nobu Mitsui. I have made several attempts to obtain details on Nobu's career for an obituary and to this writing have failed. If any close friend would like to write me about Nobu, I would appreciate it.
On a recent sunny Saturday afternoon I made a non-professional call on SamBullock, eminent Philadelphia psychiatrist, whose office is now at the Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital, 49th and Market, Philadelphia, a tremendous private psychiatric institution. Sam thinks I visit him only when the news gets low. Not so. Genuine friendship, that's all. Sam divides his time between the Institute and duties with the City of Philadelphia in mental health work, and lives in Chestnut Hill with Gloria and their two children. Frank West is also associated with the Institute.
Doug Perry practices pediatrics in Bristol, Conn., and recently moved into new offices. His oldest son, Dave, is a freshman at the University of Connecticut and number two son, Mark, enters Kimball Union Academy next fall. That should put you in the Dartmouth circle, Dave. Try to make the reunion next fall on the November 12 weekend.
From the press ... Mrs. Warner Norton Grubb Jr. was married to Rev. Edward Harding MacBurney '49, rector of St. Thomas' Church, Hanover, February 20, 1965 in Hanover. ... Bob Gray is the resident partner of Hale, Russell and Stentzel in their new Washington office at 1001 Connecticut Avenue, N. W.
Bob Field, who has the classical touch, knows the meaning of "Gaudet Tentamine Virtus," the motto emblazoning Dartmouth's Alumni Fund this year. He's driving regional agents Ed Lider, Tom Schroth,Fred Lent, and Tom Keeler towards the best performance ever. Bob really needs several big givers to sweeten up the thing and lots more general givers who perhaps haven't given and should have. Income tax time excellently reminds us that we could have given considerably more to good causes without really hurting ourselves. Now's the time to get with the Fund and stretch yourself a bit - a good feeling. And for those of you who didn't get beyond Caesar's Gallic Wars, the motto is Lord Dartmouth's "Valor Rejoices in Contest," and a Carpe Diem to you too!
