The fall meeting of the class executive committee, now becoming an annual event, is one delightful occasion. Executive committee is misleading, since all '43's are encouraged to attend, and what we execute is difficult to comprehend - other than some smart marching around the Lyme village green. Chairman Bus Mosbacher had details well organized through mine host Gordon Craven of the Lyme Inn, who somehow has adapted himself to this class (and we to him). By Friday night Pat and Bus had corralled Jimand Shirley Elleman, Don and Connie Reich,Chuck and Margaret Ann Feeney, Bud and B. J. Hall, Farmer and Jan Mead, GeorgeMunroe, Bob Clark, and the Donovans.
Wonderful autumn weather, outdoor picnic, a solid football game with Holy Cross, and the leisurely perambulating around Hanover late Saturday made the visit memorable. Hanover has traffic problems second to none, and I'm surprised that Baker Library locks its doors at five on Saturday. Don Reich, making his first Dartmouth appearance in many years and obviously enjoying every second of it, confided that he always did his best work in Baker on Saturday nights. The modern undergraduate is not quite so serious. Don is in the top management of Mergenthaler Linotype in Brooklyn, and besides doing a most creditable job as our class treasurer, he has traveled extensively here and abroad for his corporation. Don reported that 330 of us paid class dues this year out of 603 on our class roles. Suggest you send in your dues now if you are among the missing.
The Feeneys won the prize for coming the longest distance. Chuck finally faced his adversary, popular Bob Clark, known for his late and lengthy long distance calls, his parlor jokes, and his winning ways with children. The settlement will never be known, but there was much rumbling about such things as bringing the Giants back to New York and the Braves back to Boston.
George Munroe arrived after a whirlwind tour of New England preparatory schools with his sons, Taylor and Ralph. We all missed Helen, who was appearing in a play in Princeton. The three Mosbacher children and the two Hall children completed the younger group in Lyme.
From the press . . . Lt. Col. Art Cohen, an important member of the surgical teams operating on President Eisenhower in 1956 and the late John Foster Dulles in 1959, was recently awarded the Army Commendation Medal at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington. Scheduled for transfer to Germany, Art was cited for his performance since March, 1953 as a resident in general surgery, assistant Chief of the General Surgery Service and later in the dual capacity as chief of the General Surgery Service and chief of the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Section at Walter Reed. Graduating from the Long Island College of Medicine, Brooklyn, in 1946, Art served duties in California and Germany.... Bud Silverstein, whom I missed seeing in Hanover, moves from General Sales Manager, New Haven, to the new position of Marketing Manager with the Southern New England Telephone Company.
Harry Sayre was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Warwick Savings Bank, War-wick, N. Y., where Harry has practiced medicine since 1949. Graduating from N. Y. Medical College in 1945, he served in the Navy before returning to Warwick, where his father had practiced for many years. Since 1956 Harry has been health officer of both Warwick Township and the Village of War-wick. Virginia and he have three children and -live in the outskirts of the village.
Dave Mac Lane, headmaster of The Country School, Madison, Conn., for the past four years, has seen enrollment grow to 105 boys and girls in grades one through eight in his school, which draws pupils from ten Connecticut towns. The private day school is one of the interesting developments of modern primary and secondary education, and with population increases it is becoming increasingly important to parents everywhere. Dave, incidentally, wrote "Using Words," a widely known standard English textbook.
We had a reservation for Maury Dampier at the Hanover meeting, but he cancelled. Perhaps his new duties as vice president of The I. Wynner Company, New York City, were too demanding. Maury has had extensive experience in textile sales and from 1952-1960 he was associated as vice president with Ware Knitters, Inc. in Ware, Mass. Jean and he have lived with their four children in Hardwick, Mass., but according to my best information will probably move to the New York area.
Chuck Arnstein checks in from Dallas, Texas, where he is an account executive with Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith. With three Dartmouth prospects, Richard seven, Robert five, Irwin two, he feels he is the only '43 within a 200-mile radius of the big D. Tom Keeler did live in Paris, Texas, only 125 miles away, but has since moved to Corpus Christi. That's not Texas thinking, Chuck. All our classmates in Houston are practically neighbors of yours and would think nothing of driving 400 miles to see you. Call them up and have your own reunion! Last summer Chuck saw Bob Lappin, no longer running for Paleop, and reports that The Lap is one of the big tycoons of Boston's North Shore.
If Harry Gerber reads this, I'd like to hear from him. I understand he is superintendent of Canadian mining operations for Pickands Mather and Company, Montreal, Canada. How criptic can an address change be?
The Holiday Season will be on us soon. The 603 Dartmouth men to whom the Class of 1943 is home are spread all over the world in a variety of professions and roles which we would not have believed possible seventeen Decembers ago, when most of us parted. Our Dartmouth experience is one thing not tarnished by time, and whether you are successful or not in your vocation, I hope you will look back happily and gratefully on your Dartmouth heritage and will look forward courageously and enthusiastically to the New Year ahead.
