1919 was represented at the annual Class Officers meeting May 7-8 by Fred Daley,Win Batchelder, Ray Adams and your Secretary, who arrived back in Hanover from Florida just in time. As usual, the various officers attended meetings pertaining to their own particular job in class affairs, and it was all most interesting and instructive.
A few figures on the class in 1965 might be of interest. We have 279 living members (this figure does not include members who have indicated no interest in the College) and we have 223 subscribers to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE - 80% of the Class. We also send the MAGAZINE to those widows who wish to receive it. We have 145 living graduates and 134 living non-graduates. 79% of the graduates pay the class dues of $6.00 per year (which includes subscription to the MAGAZINE, one of the best in the country) and 51% of the non-graduates pay dues. Everyone, of course, receives Batch's Smoke Signal. All in all, 1919 stacks up very well with classes of our generation, particularly in the support to the Class and the College of those who, for various reasons, could not complete their college careers.
King Cole comes through with some news, quoting, "Had a brief but enjoyable visit with Larry and Mary McCutcheon in Pompano Beach (Fla.) the other day. Had not seen Larry since college days. He was doing his 'daily dozen' walking to the Post Office. Also, a most enjoyable (and surprise) letter arrived from Ray Vorce in Littleton, Mass., taking me back to the days in Camp Devens in 1919 when I saw both him and the late Major Frank Cavanaugh when they returned from overseas. Ray Jr. has ten children in a nearby town to Littleton, and another son, Roger, is in the theatrical booking business in New York, and a Commander in the Naval Reserve, while his daughter Mary, who is married and has six children, lives in a cottage on the edge of a 14-acre pond on the Vorce property." It would seem as though Ray is the champion grandpa of the class - any other contestants? ? ? ? ? King also reports that his two oldest grandsons, sons of Dr. Don Jr. '45, flew to Miami for spring vacation to visit their grandparents in Delray.
Tom Bresnahan was in Hanover recently with Claire and states, "Welcome back to the Northland and thanks for the birthday card. Last week I went out on the (Connecticut) river with the Syracuse and Dartmouth crews and Stu Russell filled in for you in your usual job as head timer. I don't think he is fully thawed out yet but he did a great job. We had a good visit with the Russells." Tom, as some of you will recall, is chief judge of most of the big crew races in the East.
Our class President Cotty Larmon andKitty are fully enjoying their tour of Europe and have reported from Scotland and Norway so far. They walked around the St. Andrews Old course on a Sunday (no golf) and, quoting, "What a delightful place - but a devilish course - traps like deep cups and contrived 'dimples' in the fairways and greens." From Norway they report "Blue water, white mountains, and good companions. See that Stu (Russell) keeps in training through the first three weeks in May."
Under the heading "Noted Layman Church Speaker" a clipping from a Lowell, Mass., paper shows that Howie Cole was a speaker at a Lenten program at the South Acton Congregational Church. Howie is president of the Newton board of trustees of the Andover Newton Theological School. Among his many religious activities are positions in the Massachusetts Baptist convention and the American Baptist convention. He has been on the board of directors of the National, Boston, and Beverly YMCAs. He spoke on "The Layman's Role in the Christian Church."
From Greif Raible, "Fact of the matter is, I never thought I would make this birthday, but thank you so much for the greeting from the class. Bert (Pete) Closson was down for a day and we enjoyed the races which opened here at Keeneland. This race business is really tough. So far, I haven't anything to talk about but we always have hopes."
And now, so long in this column until October, keep the news coming to both Batch and your Secretary, and put down on your calendar October 8-10, the dates of our annual gathering at Woodstock-Hanover.
