Well, this is the last time you will be hearing from your perennial Secretary and some new blood on this job is long overdue. However, many thanks for the hundreds of letters, post cards and phone calls over more than twenty years with news of your activities —it is too bad that all of you did not check in but any secretary is not a mind reader, and if we do not hear we can't write about you. Please give our new secretary your full support and between him and our sterling Smoke Signal Editor Win Batchelder you will be kept posted on 1919 as we go into our 51st year out of the College.
A few statistics on the Class as we are attending our 50th reunion. As of early May, we have 260 living members of whom 14 are either lost or disinterested, a very small percentage indeed in comparison with other classes. We have 69 widows who are interested in the Class and the College, many of whom have loyally supported the Memorial Gift Program for which they rate our sincere thanks.
A full report on the 50th will be forthcoming in the special reunion issue of the MAGAZINE in July and from Batch in the Smoke Signal.
Attention Guy Cogswell and Charlie McGoughran '20 - a note from Greif Raible saying "We were on a plane returning from Cleveland to Lexington and didn't know that 'lrish Whirl' was running at Hialeah." Too bad, as the horse won and paid a big price.
Ed Bailey of Buzzards Bay writes, "Thanks for the birthday card - but I don't have birthdays anymore - too late. Dividing year between Scottsdale, Ariz., and Cape Cod and after a lapse of three years am playing a lot of golf again."
A slight needle from Ken Huntington on a card from the Pink Beach Club in Bermuda where he and Marj were enjoying themselves during late April, "Should I thank you for omitting us from the Colwell and Demond parties in February and the class luncheon in New York????" My apologies to the Huntingtons - thought I had everyone present - know I am slipping - another reason why a new secretary is important.
Tom Bresnahan notes, "Your card arrived right on the dot for which many thanks. I had decided to give up having birthdays until someone pointed out that it would be well to consider the alternative." Tom also expects to march in the ROTC parade in June!!!!
Red (Ted) Loudon extended Easter greetings to the Rands, among others and will be on hand in June.
Charlie Warner was in Ft. Lauderdale for a short time in March but was called home by the illness of Kathryn and, as her recovery is still a ways off, cannot make the reunion.
Ray Hinds thanks the class for his card and promises that he and Harriet will be on hand for the big reunion. Also, the same from Art Stackpole who comments, "The combined insignia - the College's Bicentennial and our Fiftieth —is unique and excellent. I believe someone said it is JimDavis's idea." Right you are, Art, and the birthday card as well.
Cotty and Kitty Larmon had to cut short their trip due to Kitty's illness, but all is well now and they came back to Hanover early in May.
There are still a couple of weeks before the 1969 Alumni Fund closes its books so, if you have been putting off your annual gift, get it up now, and help Fred Daley win another Green Derby for 1919.
Your Secretary could not retire from this job without extending his most sincere thanks to Charlie Widmayer, editor of this fine MAGAZINE, and to Barbara Hayward and Dorothy Starzyk of the staff, for their cooperation and forbearance in handling this column and to Nancy Elliott of the Alumni Records Office for keeping us posted on where the '19ers are.
