DECEMBER 1966 ERNEST L. BARCELLA, EDWARD S. BROWN JR., RICHARD H. HOUCK

This was the autumn of the agony and the ecstasy: of superb achievement and utter frustration; of - well, you can't win 'em all!

Success (in 1965) really hadn't spoiled us ...or deluded us into seriously expecting yet another unbeaten season. We had confidently felt, however, that Coach Bob Blackman had all the makings of another all-the-way Ivy champ. Stubbornly, especially after watching them grind up Princeton and Yale, we still feel that the Great Green is tops. But the ball doesn't always bounce your way - as it definitely didn't at Cambridge - so you got what the experts call an upset. And, for a gallant team, a broken dream.

Win or lose, we salute Blackman, Captain Bill Calhoun and the 1966 team as proudly as we did the unbeaten 1965 champions.

took ahead, now, to 1967, for surely we can "build another dream beyond the dream that died."

Looking back a moment, the 1966 season was rich beyond measure in treasued memories. Who among those of us who were privileged to see it can ever forget the Princeton weekend when the central New England countryside - from mountaintop to river bank - was aglow with a magnificence of color such as these old eyes never before beheld? And the full joy of victory captured and put to music by the College band, tootling triumphantly out of Memorial Field, up Crosby and East Wheelock to the can-pus, with youngsters and dogs tagging and wagging along in high spirits. . . . The bells of Rollins Chapel proclaiming the glad tidings to the golden hills and valleys. . . . And the warm and wonderful ship at Hopkins Center where members of 1934 gathered in such numbers for roast beef dinner it seemed like a rump reunion. ...

Drawing on memory, we call the roll of those we saw in Hanover Princeton weekend some with, some without family members - Stu Anderson. Ed Brown, Peanuts Davies, Charlie Dean. Marty Dwyer, Bill Emerson, John Foley, Dave Hedges, Chuck Herschey, Herb Heston. Al Hine, Dick Houck, kay Hulsart, Al Jacobson, Randy Klinefelter, Johnny Lyle, George McGrath, Rollie Morton, Gene Orsenigo, Bob Palmer, Bill Scherman (who was warming up for a hardship assignment - trip to Hawaii), Stan Smoyer, Shorty Thomas, and Bill Wilson. If we missed any other 19345, they had to be sitting on the 50-yard line which was 50 yards closer than most of us sat....

Many of these - and others - were among the 55,000 who presided over Dartmouth's thrilling victory over Yale in the Bowl on another glorious Saturday afternoon. (We missed the thing at Cambridge and, out of respect for the feelings of the brethren, are happy to skip all further reference to it.)

With the help of our faithful "spotter" Hank Werner - we saw these "others" at the Bowl: Lois and Moe Frankel (back from their world trip and looking tops), Irv Diamond (who wanted to know about skiing classes at Hanover in December. Anybody know?); Fitch Briggs and Johnny Lashar (whose car bears a Connecticut license plate with the letters JML); Bill De-Riemer, Johnny Bathrick (whose boy starred for the Big Green in 1958); Hank Bryan, Bud Hart, Alice and Nick Xanthaky, Marge and George Copp (looking for their nephew - Richard Wallace Copp '67); Jock Hinsman and family, Ginny and Dave Callaway, Tommy Thomas, Bob Kolbe, Karl Weber, Joe Swenson ("Red" has now turned to Old Silver); Sigrid and Gail Raphael. Sharing good field position - on the 50 - were the Brothers Morton, Rollie and Bill (he of 33.-3.3 game fame). And down on the field was Werner's lad - Peter '67 - taking stills and movies of the game for Dartmouth Club consumption.... At a distance, we'd have sworn we saw Art Leonard, Russ Ireland and Bob Wilmot - or three guys who looked enough, like 'em to be their twins....

WEDDING BELLES - Ann Denise Meigher. daughter of the late Steve Meigher, to Dr. Henry Louis Smith 2d, at Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., Oct. 9.... Harry Wallace's daughter, Jane, to Reeve Vanneman, top Cornell scholar and athlete (captain of the Big Red lacrosse team, great lineman on its football team and in the top 10 in his class scholastically...also one of the tallest at 6 feet 6)....

MAIL CALL - From Hank Hazen, Marblehead, Mass.: "Son Gregory is a lieutenant j.g. on the 'USS Repose' off Vietnam; son Henry III, assistant timber manager of National Forest in Oregon . . . son Andrew in the Air Force at Andrews A.F.B., and I am still struggling along at GE in. Lynn, Mass." . . .

From Len Harrison, Malverne, Long Island, N. Y.: "Jean and I were in Hanover twice during the summer. . . . Met Bob Balgley and Fred Robbe. Both had sons in the Class of '66. Bob Engleman's son was also graduated from Juck School. Our No. 1 son, Walter, also 'commenced' in June. He won a N. Y. State Regents Scholarship for Medicine but could not collect on it as he already had contracted to attend Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia. He seems to be thoroughly enjoying his budding medical career... . Our second Hanover visit was occasioned by our attendance for the third year at Alumni College, which we always find stimulating and enjoyable. The only other '34 in attendance was John Anderson and Mary. We roomed next door to each other in Middle Fayer and enjoyed their company tremendously. 'Young' John didn't miss a day of tennis during our entire stay. . . ."

DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS , Bob Allabough, Walt Arnold, Al Bennett, Don Bunting, Bill Carr, Mac Carter, Sid Carter, Bud Clabaugh, Hod Clark, Mac Collins, Dick Compton, George Ellis, Ray Ely, George Engel, Milt Fabricant, Paul Fitzpatrick, Jerry Fries, Perry Gilbert, Howie Gussenhoven, Bill Hackley, George Ham, Herb Hawkes, Dick Hayes, Ed Hilton, Eck Jones, Jamie King, Jack Lynch, Mac McCloskey, Win Mansfield, John Murphy, Ike Newman, Maury O'Connor, Bob Palmer, Paul Pelletier, Bruce Pringle, Gail Raphael, Jim Reardon, Bill Richardson, Robbie Robinson, Bob Smith, Ray Snow (Christmas package), Jocko Stangle, Herb Steyn, Dan Taggart, Eliot Thomas, Mac Thomas, Ed Valier.

A WISH - Now, as another year draws to a close, we prayerfully wish that the glow of the Christmas season brings peace and joy to the hearts of all of you and your loved ones and that 1967 bestows the best of all blessings....
