On our annual autumn pilgrimage to the campus, we sadly watched - and heard the passing of a revered landmark and proudly witnessed the perpetuation of a time-honored tradition.
Early, one misty morning, we were awakened traumatically by a harsh clanging that sounded for all the world as if the Baker Library chimes had suddenly gone berserk. In the midst of this cacophonic clatter, Ye Olde Scribe leaped from his bed to see what the hell was the matter. When what to his drowsy old eyes should appear, but a mighty crane staring him down with a leer. Its toothy steel jaws drooled with tangled plumbing it had just chewed out of the Hanover Inn. With each bite of this monster, the old Inn became a memory, and the "new" wing (1923) stood starkly and unelegantly alone.
To generations of Dartmouth men (since 1888), the Inn had stood as a sort of landlocked lighthouse, a comforting corner of hospitality to weary traveler and student alike, a repository of richest nostalgia.
But our thoughts were summoned from the past by the view across the campus young men of the Class of 1970 striding stalwartly and confidently into the future, carrying forward the most treasured of all Hanover traditions - the Dartmouth fellowship. During the morning, we mingled among them and then, secure in the thought that the torch had been passed to strong and willing hands, we moved on to the golf Course to leave par thoroughly undisturbed and to gaze upon the glories of autumn unfolding on the distant hills.
That evening, we walked in the chill of a starry twilight to the warmth of a house by the side of the road, there to visit with Barbara and Ed Brown. Squire Brown reminisced about his summer ... his catch of a sunfish on the Cape ... his visit there with Ike Besse ... the achievement of Walt Crandell in reaching the finals of the men's Varsity Courts doubles....
Professor Ed also recounted the excitement in Hanover caused by the presence at the Zete House of a boy boa named Irving and a girl boa named Sadie. Carpenters discovered that Irving and Sadie, pets of one of the Zetes, had taken up residence within the walls of the House - an event that may bring consternation to old-line Zetes such as Don Allen, Stu Barber, Bam Brennon, George Cogswell, Bill Cumings, Em Day, Bill Gibson, Jack Gilbert, Ted Gregory, Art Grimes, Howie Gussenhoven, Dick Houck, Bob King, Willie Leveen, Ray Vickland. Dick Wells, Bud Yallalee, and other ancients of the order.... (Latest reports indicate that Irving has gone to Boa heaven, but Sadie's whereabouts remain a mystery. One rumor is that she may come out for fall house parties.)
Onward and upward go men .of 1934. ... Dave Hedges named a senior vice president of the First City National Bank of Houston.... Bill Wilson tapped for the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees. Bill will serve a three-year term on the 15-man board which represents 7,000 U.S. hospitals....
The 1966 edition of the Westchester (N. Y.) Community College yearbook was dedicated to the dean of the college - BobReynolds - because of "his intense regard for duty, his loyalty to the college and his concern for all." After his graduation from Dartmouth, Bob got his master's and a doctorate in education from Columbia....
Never too busy for Dartmouth is Herb Jackson who has taken on the job of Assistant Class Agent in spite of 'round-the-clock demands on his time as chief biologist of the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration; his contributions to a variety of publications on a broad range of subjects such as "Wildlife Underground," "Preliminary Observations on Spawning Potential in the Striped Bass," "The Culture of Aromatic (Turkish) Tobacco"; his activities with nearly a dozen professional groups, including the American Fisheries Society, American Institute of Biological Scientists, American Water Works Association - and more.... Herb did graduate work at Harvard and Cornell and got his Ph.D. at Cornell in 1939. .. . He's presently headquartered at the Robert A. Taft Sanitary Engineering Center in Cincinnati....
From Bob Balgley (15 Mountain View Drive, W. Hartford, Conn.) - "You might be interested to know that I was remarried on August 28 to the former Mrs. Eleanor Schweitzer and at that time doubled the size of my family. I added three daughters (Adele - Smith '65, Carol - Pembroke '67 and Margie - a high school senior) to Paul - Dartmouth '66 (and now a graduate student at Indiana U.); Joel - Morris Harvey '70 and Meredith, who is a high school junior. Incidentally, Meredith has made a remarkable recovery from the extensive burns she received in the airplane accident in which her mother perished. During the summer she made up all the school work she missed while in the hospital for many months and rejoined her original classmates in September."
To Bob and his bride, who plan a belated honeymoon in Greece, we wish every happiness ... and to Meredith, we express admiration for her great courage....
