Had a great class officer's meeting on May 1 in Hanover. Bill Scherman, Art Leonard, EdBrown, and myself, with wives, were in attendance. My brother John and his wife Lucy had a cocktail party for us, along with Ed and Barbara Brown, Walt and Ellie Crandell (he just retired from the VA Hospital in Norwich), Spike andEffie Fulton, Pru Gilmore (Harry was out of town), John and Franny Lyle, and Jim and AnnDarling. Then Ed and Barbara had all the '34s for a luscious dinner party Saturday night. It was truly a mini-reunion.
Happy-end-of-the-summer to you, too!! Don't know where it went, but it sure went.
Had some foreign correspondence in August - a card from Biarritz from George and GiseleCollins. They had a North Cape cruise in Norway, and then went to Copenhagen and Belgium, where they visited Gisele's family. They were to be in Biarritz for August and back in Florida in September. As if that weren't enough, Mary and Tom Beers wrote from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, where he had a golf game with Jack Weisert '31, a friend of my brother John '31. Tom said the drought was terrible and there were many fires. A few days later, I received another card from Tom: "P.S. Walked into the dining room last night to find George and GiseleCollins having a night out." Small world!!!
Line Daniels wrote in August that he read my plea for help in the May issue (see, some people do read the column) and was responding. The above named Collinses had been their house guests before flying to Norway. He added that his wife Carla and he are tennis enthusiasts and play every day unless blocked by weather. They have their own court, so no waiting to get on. Theysent a picture of their court, built in their front yard "to preserve the garden in back and to cut down on mowing in front." Good idea. They had motored to Nova Scotia in July, coming home via Hanover, and because of all the super highways were there before they knew it. Not having been back for a spell, they saw Hopkins Center, Leverone Field House, and the new Thompson Arena. They tried to track down Ed Brown, but he had gone to Cape Cod for vacation. Line has been retired from the federal government for three years and has spent his time playing tennis and working with inmates of the Lorton Reformatory in Virginia, preparing them for parole. A good use of your time, Line, and good luck. Thanks so much for the newsy letter.
Our president Frank Fleath has called a meeting of the officers and the resources committee for the morning of the Harvard game, October 16 in Hanover. The first item on the agenda will be consideration of another gift to the College. You will recall that our first gift was the video-tape equipment for the Smoyer Lounge in the Thompson Arena. He would ap- preciate suggestions. Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend, but hope many of you will.
Board Veazie said he had begun to think about retirement from Swift and Company, but just received an appointment as a special assistant to the financial vice president, with primary responsibilities in the area of corporate planning and evaluation and Swift management policy review. Board says he will be consolidating planning and policies for seven operating companies, and a few associated enterprises. I can see you won't be joining our retirement group for a while. Board, but congratulations on the appointment. He and Lydia haven't been to Hanover since the '73 Alumni College, but hope to be back in the fall of '76 or, for sure, '77.
A second letter from Frank Heath really was a copy of this letter to Jake Jacobson and I'll quote it, since it is short: "I have just received the final report on 1934's performance in the Alumni Fund Campaign. You deserve congratulations from the Class for another outstanding job. I am particularly impressed with the fact that our participation index of 78.8 percent tops that of all other classes in Group 3." To which I add AMEN, Jake, and thanks from all of us.
Stan Silverman, our illustrious past secretary, sent me a copy of his letter to Jake, complimenting him on the tremendous job the head agent for our Class for the Alumni Fund had done. Stan pointed out the same thing Frank did about participation, but brought out the figures: 376 contributors out of a possible 477 — pretty darned good and we sincerely hope it will be an inspiration to the 101 of you that missed this year. What a joy it would be next year if you joined the rest of us!!! Please try. All for now — more later.
