To follow up on an item in the reunion report regarding the absence of our former class secretary, Sue and Mouse Hall have announced the birth of a daughter, Mary Evelyn, on June 30, 1966. Congratulations on behalf of the Class, and welcome to the newest addition to the '41 family. Incidentally, I don't think there is any connection, but Bruce Friedlich has just announced that Mouse has accepted a newly created office in the class as "Director of Special Events."
A letter from Rob Barstow points out one omission in the reunion story. (I am sure there were many more!) It seems that four hardier classmates, accompanied by two sons and one wife, arose at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, drove to the Ravine Camp, and climbed to the summit of Mt. Moosilauke by 9:00 a.m. Besides Rob and his son David, those making the trip were Joe Fuller and his son Nathaniel '67, Babs and DaveNutt, and George Simpson. The group brought back some rocks from the summit together with a picture which we hope to be able to publish in a later issue of the class notes.
In mid-August, Boston, New England, and New York papers carried feature stories on the election of DickHill as president of The First National Bank of Boston. Dick thus becomes the 22nd president of New England's largest and the nation's oldest chartered commercial bank. Dick's rise has been rapid since he joined THE BANK IN 1946 AFTER four years of Navy duty. He was elected a loan officer in 1948, assistant vice president in 1951, vice president in 1955, and executive vice president last December. Dick is a member of the Association of Reserve City Bankers, a corporator of the Salem Savings Bank, a member of the executive council of the Massachusetts Bankers Association, and a director of the Transportation Association of America. In addition, he holds numerous directorships and trusteeships in civic and charitable organizations in the greater Boston area.
Word has just reached your secretary of the election last spring of Win Watson to the position of vice president of the American Stock Exchange. Win, who had been senior vice president, director of market planning and creative director for the marketing consultant firm of Basford Inc. for the past thirteen years, will coordinate similar activities for the Exchange. He will handle public information, educational activities, and special research projects to expand and coordinate Exchange services for individual and institutional investors.
Lee Barrett, who has been with the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston since 1952, has been appointed director of advertising and will be responsible for developing and guiding all advertising programs for the company. Prior to joining the insurance company, Lee had been in newspaper work and retail and industrial advertising in both Maine and Massachusetts.
Don Samuel, a partner of Ralph E. Samuel and Company, members of the New York Stock Exchange, has been elected president of the board of directors of the Jewish Family Service, which is one of the oldest and largest family counseling services in the country. In addition, Don is president of the Energy Fund, a mutual fund. He is also a trustee and assistant treasurer of the Foundation of Jewish Philanthropies and a trustee of the Dalton School.
At the inauguration of Alan Carson Rankin as the seventh president of Indiana State University, the College was officially represented by Chet Williams.
It is with deep regret that I report the death of Jack Waldorf at the University Hospital in Cleveland on July 21 following a brief illness. Jack is survived by his wife, the former Ann Chute, two daughters, Ann Elizabeth and Susan, his mother, Mrs. Arthur E. Waldorf, and a sister, Mrs. George C. Houck. The Class extends to all of his family its deepest sympathies.
Many of you have read or heard of the plans for the rebuilding of a portion of the Hanover Inn. However, a picture published in a New Hampshire paper in mid-August would, I am sure, have saddened many of the Class. It showed a huge wrecking crane commencing demolition of the old section of the Inn. Most of the upper floors above the lobby, gift shop, and coffee shop had already fallen into rubble. This is progress, to be sure, but I know that to many of us the Inn Corner will not seem the same with a shiny new building replacing the well-known old landmark.
For those who have Alumni Directories, we will try to keep them updated by publishing address changes for classmates as they are received from Hanover. The following changes or corrections have been received since the publication of the new directory early this summer: julius W. Anderson, Holmes Circle, Farmington, Conn. 06032-Henry J. Fisk, Box 512, Wilder, Vt. 05088; Col. Roger F. Haley (Ret.), Apt. 102, 66 Cleary Court, San Francisco, Calif. 94109-Peter M. Keir, 1921 Martha's Road, Alexandria, Va. 22300; Roger Sands. 11 Mahogany Rd„ Forbes Park, Makati, Rizal, Philippines; Maj. George D. Schroeder, USAF (Ret.), 1417 Swiss, Arlington, Texas 76010.
In August the trustees of the State University of New York named Dr. Joe Hill as president of the Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and dean of its College of Medicine. Joe holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in health education and a Master's degree in bacteriology from Yale. He joined the Downstate Medical Center in 1956 as executive assistant to the dean. Since 1963 he has served as vice president for administration, and for six months in 1963 and 1964 served as acting president and dean. In his present capacity, Joe will be in charge of a large medical, teaching, research and patient care center. The medical school, with an enrollment of 760, is the largest in New York State and the fourth largest in the country. In addition there is a graduate enrollment of 66. The faculty numbers almost 2000.
In the hopes that this issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE will be published in time, an announcement is being included here of the first special event to be undertaken by the Class. Hank Frechette, Mouse Hall, BruceFriedlich, and Dan Provost have arranged reservations for 50 people at the Lake Club on Spofford Lake, ten miles east of Brattleboro on Route 9A, for the weekend of the Princeton game, October 7-9. Tentative plans include providing air conditioned bus transportation for all to and from Hanover to the game on Saturday, and a post-game party Saturday night including dinner and a band. Classmates in the east should have received an announcement of this party by now, but any who did not, and who are interested in attending should contact any one of the group planning the affair to see if any openings remain.
