First of all, let me extend my sincerest apology—both to my classmates and those who eagerly anticipate reading this column every month—for my failure to amuse and entertain you in the last issue. Unfortunately, my imagination was running on empty and I was unable to conjure up any interesting stories about the class of '82.
However, I am now rejuvenated and ready to impart enough juicy dirt to keep you busy for at least 15 minutes or so.
Much of the body of this column comes from Tom von Hermann so I'll let him tell you the news in his own words (for a little while).
"Susan and I still live north of Chicago and are prepping for yet another miserable winter. We have a two-year-old daughter named Katherine, who is just now growing some blond hair—as I continue to lose mine. I'm expecting number two just before Christmas and am really enjoying his thing they call fatherhood. I'm still working as a management consultant doing regulatory and marketing work within the telecommunications world. Sounds entertaining, huh?
"I see Jim Steiner when we travel to Hawail each year. He is a happy Honolulu lawyer and shares a housefull of kids there (three, as of this letter) with Jeny. Glenn Fox is in Dallas with one boy and also another on the way. He does his geo/engineering thing for a consulting firm and spends months each year in Argentina. Business, I presume. We skied together last winter, and he is still no slouch on skis. I was in New York City recently and looked up Jon Hedley. He is a dad to a six-month-old boy."
Thanks for the updates, Tim, but I really think you need to travel more.
Speaking of travel, Chip Hankins is doing more than his share—mostly to visit his wife, Phillipa, in St. Kitts. Of course it was she who chose to drop me a line.
"I am down here going to veterinary school I have one more year here, then seven months in Oklahoma!! Chip comes down once a semester and I see him between semesters but, sheesh ... it's hard! He arrives in December for two months. He is presently trying to sell all our worldly possessions and move down here. Why do I feel like we are going in the reverse direction to most of our friends? Know anyone who wants to buy a cabin in the Sierras?"
How's that for free advertising? For more information on the beautiful two-bedroom bungalow, call 1-800 ... I'd better not. They need their rest.
Finally, in the corporate news, Andrew Shapiro has joined the GE Research and Development Center as a mechanical engineer. Andrew received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1990. He and his wife, Betsy Henry, are now living in Schenectady, N.Y.
That's all I can come up with. On the home front, I have left Boston College and am working in production at the New England Sports Network. Roone Arledge, watch your back.
