At the close of last month's column, I indicated that I would give you a report on the Class Executive Committee meeting which was held in New York on last November 3. Classmates attending this meeting included Messrs. Young, Lilienthal, Bolte, Willers, Harvey, Provost, O'Connor, Tepper, Friedlich, Smith, Stillman, Gunst, and Thomas. The Treasurer reported that the class finances are in excellent shape with more than $8,000 in the bank and current dues having been received from more than 250 members of the class including thirty "new" dues payers. Some of these funds, as you know, will be used by the class to pay for sending the ALUMNI MAGAZINE to all classmates and to those widows of classmates who would like to receive them. After discussion, it was generally agreed that a modest amount of class funds could be used to publicize special events such as the Yale picnic, the Fall reunion at Spofford Lake, and other activities.
An extensive review was made of projects carried on by other classes. It was agreed that a most sensible project insofar as class interest and participation are concerned might be a non-fund raising project, and it was agreed to explore the feasibility of a Class Awards Program. This-project would start with nominations by classmates or their spouses of outstanding members of the Class in such fields as education, law, medicine, national or local government, religion, or public service. Significant accomplishments in business or by businessmen in public affairs would also be recognized. Judges for the Awards would be a panel of distinguished men and women including Dartmouth men not members of the Class of 1941. Dan Provost agreed to accept the chairmanship of a committee charged with the development of all phases of the Class Awards Program which he will present to the Executive Committee for its consideration at the Spring meeting to be held in Chicago.
Also, some forward-thinking man at the meeting noted that October 12 is the date for the Princeton-Dartmouth game this fall, and it was agreed that this date should be reserved for the annual get-together at Spofford Lake. You will be hearing more about this later on in the year.
Bob Evans who has been with the Legal Department of the Columbia Broadcasting System since 1950 was named Deputy General Counsel for that organization late last fall.
Your secretary had a pleasant visit last month from Buzz Willis, Jack McMillin, and Ed Acker. Buzz and Jack were in the state testing the business climate for potential investment in commercial real estate, and, of course, Ed, as New Hampshire's new Industrial Development Representative made the perfect guide. After a tour of our office and metal warehouse we settled down to a fine hour of reminiscing.
Word has just reached Hanover that Tom Charlton passed away on June 2, 1967. The note from his wife did not indicate the cause of Tom's death. The sincere though belated sympathy of the Class is extended to his wife, Lucille, and daughters, Margaret and Patricia.
The mail bag is empty. So, unless you would like two columns of blank paper, followed by a few address changes, please take pen in hand and provide your secretary with a few noteworthy items for next month's column.
