Medical School
With a tip of the hat to Ralph HunterM'32 and Marsh Tenney M'44 for their fine work as interim Acting Deans, we are pleased to welcome our new Dean, Carleton B. Chapman, M.D., who assumed the office on October 1. We anticipate continuation of the forward program of the School under his leadership.
Operations are already underway to erect a Butler Building just north of the service entrance on the ground floor of the Medical Science Building. This is planned to provide approximately 3000 square feet of additional space for laboratories and storage.
Oldtimers (that means prior to 1952) will be saddened to learn of the death on September 18 of Mrs. Margaret Robinson who served as Medical Librarian for many years before that date.
The Ralph E. Miller Lecture was delivered on September 30 by Alex B. Novikoff, Ph.D., Research Professor of Pathology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Incidental Intelligence: Jack Bowler M'15, who now is busier in retirement (?) than he was previously, has been reelected to the board of directors of the National Life Insurance Company President of the Denver Unit of the American Cancer Society's Colorado Division is the new title of CalFisher M'33.... John Jewett M'36 was recently promoted to Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard. ... Bill Stahl M'44 has assumed the duties of Associate Professor of Surgery at New York University, with offices in the University Hospital.... The Bert Sehwarzs M'45 dropped in for a fast look at what is going on in Hanover The Ted Clarkes M'49 stopped off briefly on their way to the Dartmouth Grant for a fishing vacation.
Another DMS contribution to academic medicine is Ray Alexanian M'53 who is serving as Assistant Professor of Medicine, with primary emphasis on research, clinical hematology and teaching, at the University of Texas' M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. ... The Dave Lees M'55, with their daughter and son, are back in his home town (Portland, Oregon) doing Cardiology and Internal Medicine. They recently entertained Howie Geist M'53 and Phil Parshley M'54.... We envy Bill Continl M'56 and his new bride, nee Kathryn Ryan, their two months in Hawaii. ... Gerry Finkel M'57 is enjoying his work as Assistant Professor of Pathology at N.Y.U. and as Associate Pathologist at Bellevue.... After completing his surgical residency at West Virginia, KenThomas M'57 is "passing through a surgical menopause" before donning the USAF blue for a tour of duty in Libya. ... Bob Freeh M'58 has moved to Barnes in St. Louis for a "few more years of academic work" in pediatric radiology LCDR Frank Hoefle M'59 is on the hospital ship, USS Repose, off Vietnam.... After introducing their year-old son to Hanover in August, the Pete Spiegels M'59 traveled to Portsmouth, Va., where Pete keeps busy with radiology.
The Mayo Clinic is keeping the Tom Ashbys M'62 busy these days.... The KenDanielsons M'63 brought their two youngsters through to look us over in late September. ... Andy Cole M'64 and his architect wife are now living in the City of Brotherly Love.
