DECEMBER 1966 DICK BALDWIN

Winter sports at Dartmouth are in a "comeback" stage. The varsity basketball and hockey teams under veteran leaders Doggie Julian and Eddie Jeremiah are especially interested in improving on their losing seasons in 1965-66. Both clubs have had good advance workouts prior to the regular schedule with out side scrimmages against area teams. Swimming should hit the headlines this winter, with skiing again king-size among Eastern colleges. Coach Ellie Noyes would like more team and individual awards during the indoor track season.

There are two new varsity-freshman coaches on the staff this winter. John Kenfield takes over the squash program. He is also coach of tennis. Football assistant Quentin Currie replaces Whitey Burnham as chief of wrestling.

Coaches Julian and Jeremiah will be tutoring their final teams this year. Doggie, who has been coaching hoop teams since 1928 when he started at Albright College, anticipates a better offense and more victories. He has been at Dartmouth since 1950. Although his latest band of Indians will not compete with the fine records of 1956, 1958, and 1959 NCAA representatives, the Tribe should pep up on offense and climb over last year's 3-21 mark. Julian is currently president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Gunnar Malm, a senior captain, 6-7, 191, who can play either center or forward, is the brightest Big Green performer. Six sophomores join the club this season and some of the new talent will be pressed into service immediately.

Dave Gavitt will handle the freshman basketball team this winter before taking over the varsity in 1967-68. Tony Lupien will assist with the frosh and will resume his regular head freshman post next season.

Dartmouth enters a new tournament this season. The Indians will compete with Purdue, Georgetown, and host University of Rochester on December 28-29 in the Kodak Classic at Rochester, N. Y. Dartmouth meets the University of Rochester Yellowjackets in the first round.

Another national president sends his final team on ice this season. Coach Jerry, prexy of the American Hockey Coaches Association, has eight lettermen on his '66 squad. Senior goalie Warren Cook is the captain. Dartmouth has another major assignment to maintain the hot pace in Ivy action. Ab Oakes, ready to assume control of the varsity next year, will coach the freshmen with assistant Grant Stanbrook.

Senior Fellow Harris Wagenseil, Dartmouth record-setter in the pole vault 14'6¼"), will captain the indoor track team. He is a Rhodes Scholar nominee.

In swimming, Captain Bob Dalrymple, a senior freestyler, posted ten firsts and seven seconds in twenty events in 1965-66. He was the top scorer for the Indians with 98 points. Karl Michael with the varsity and Ron Keenhold with the freshmen should enjoy very successful campaigns. Coach Michael's varsity could turn in the best summary in the history of swimming at Dartmouth.
