Not so hard to pry away from the TV with the Bowl Games out of the way, and the Christmas parties seem but a blur of martinis, clam dip and shrimp, so it must be time to set about another column. It's this or pay the Christmas bills and I couldn't possibly do that.
Johnny Fenno is good enough to pass on the notes he gets from the more communicative dues payers and we'll head the list with them this month:
From Jackson, Mich., comes money and greetings from the Bill Warnocks. Summer school and school year '51-52 was spent at BU chasing his Master's degree in education, which was finally nabbed in June 1954. Taught two years in Portland, Me., and is in his second year of teaching in the Jackson school system. Plans to do some work at Michigan State this winter toward the Doctorate. But the big news is that Nancy and Bill adopted a 6-day-old boy who was 11 weeks old as the New Year came pounding in. The name is Jeffrey William and it's not hard to tell that he's getting his share of TLC and then some, from two very proud parents. In case you are looking for the trio, try at 336 Union St., Jackson.
A note came back from the Neal Gilberts which prompted us to look into our files and dig out the very complete questionnaire answer they sent in while they were in Washington, last year. At that time, Neal was working on his Doctorate in philosophy, having compiled a thesis on the history of philosophy. The note returned to Johnny said that the Ph.D. was finally won and the current address is Raleigh, N. C. Also, if our figurin' isn't off, there should be a third member of the family by now. But getting back to the wonderful note that we've been holding back for a Newsletter that never gets written, Milena and Neal have been real nomads, living in no community longer than six months since their marriage in August 1952. They had accumulated, at the last informal census, hundreds of books, four oriental rugs, a "do-it-yourself" Hi-Fi set which apparently functions in accordance with the size of the current living quarters, and, as noted above, a Ph.D. We hope they'll bring us up to date real soon. Address: 803 Chamberlain St., Raleigh, N. C.
Tom Crook got quite a write-up in the Milwaukee Sentinel last November 1 as he assumed the post of executive secretary of the Mitchell Street Advancement Association, an organization which is apparently a "shopping district" organization on the South Side of Milwaukee. Tom did graduate work at the University of Chicago and arrived in Milwaukee in 1951 where he has held positions as associate director of admissions at Northwestern Military Academy, associate director of the Wisconsin Association for Mental Health and as a partner in an advertising agency. He lives at 1023 E. Colfax PL, Whitefish Bay, Wis.
Had a very nice letter from Norm Laird which has aged far too long in my files. Norm is located in Atlanta and travels out of there for Becton-Dickinson & Co., those people who seem to have their B-D on a good many of the needles that fill us with wonder drugs from time to time. He says that he runs across EdGingrich, a peddler for the Scotch Tape people in Minnesota, Red Evans, with International Paper and Ed Shipper, who gets into Atlanta from time to time out of his home base in Florence, Ala. Bonnie, Norm's spouse, is a Columbia, S. C., gal and he owns up to being a Georgia landowner, so it looks like Vermont has lost a native son to the Deep South. They have a 4-year-old boy who acts like an Indian though, so there's hope that the mixture of Yankee ingenuity and gracious southern living will produce a fine addition to some future class. That address is 1441 Sheridan Road, N.E., Atlanta.
Joe Smith got a free (??) trip to Europe under the aegis of IBM World Trade Corp. some time last year and spent a month on the other side, working in Paris, Milan, Stuttgart, Bruxelles and London. In case I hadn't already mentioned it, Joe and Helen had another boy, who is now a little over a year old, named Kevin. Toe Tr. is 5 in May.
Lou and Ann Clarke are in Syracuse, N. Y., where he is a Resident (08-GYN) at the Upper N. Y. State Medical Center, Syracuse Memorial Hospital. Their first-born, Timothy Andrew, was born last May 8, at which time they were living at 117 Victoria PI., Syracuse 10.
Red Evans got buried along with the rest of you good respondents and I note that he and Janice were figuring on giving Walter a younger brother or sister last August. Wha hoppened, Red? For those of you who are feeling restless and can't figure where to spend that vacation or set up that convention, why not check with Mo Witherspoon at the Bon Air Hotel in Augusta, Ga. The weather is probably delightful there right now and the golf superb. He and Colleen have two girls, ages - and 1½.
Unless there is another stray pile of material some place, here endeth the lesson. To those who wrote so long ago but didn't break into print until now, our deepest apologies. I'm sure that your friends are just as pleased to hear about you stale, but that's no excuse. This house of ours lends itself beautifully to just about everything but storage. Incidentally, we've done used up the backlog so if we don't get a few notes from you people, we'll just have to run on hot air and newspaper clippings (and you know how awful that can get) next time. I do know that Bobo Russell is beginning to work up a few ulcer pains in anticipation of the Alumni Fund which kicks off in April, and many hands make light work, so if you could take a little time and help out this year in contacting a few classmates, it would help more than you know to contact him at 90 Washington Ave., Saugerties, N. Y.
Those of you who haven't yet sent your fin to Johnny Fenno are receiving the MAGAZINE through the courtesy of those who already have. The fin covers the MAGAZINE subscription and class dues and his address is 120 North Lincoln Ave., Niles, Mich.
With reunion (our BIG TENTH) coming up in just two years, I'm wondering if it would be such a screwy idea to set up some kind of a fund like a Christmas Club where we could kick in a few bucks a month for two years and make sure that we hadn't already spent that dough that comes in handy for making reunions. Must be a banker or two in the crowd who's already bonded and could look after the situation for us. Might even prevail on the Treasurer to take over the job. What do you think?
Must say that I've been not a little surprised and flattered to note that the gals seem to read the MAGAZINE, and even this column, almost as avidly as the guys. Might be some room for a section for the womenfolk if it didn't degenerate to straight recipes and child care. Not to say those things aren't important, but we gotta draw the line somewhere.
Looking forward to hearing from each and every one of you - particularly the gals - and to seeing you next month.
Secretary, 807 Tomahawk Lane, Niles, Mich.
Treasurer, 120 No. Lincoln Ave., Niles, Mich.
