Several of us were able to get together last week here in New York for our annual fall executive committee meeting. The most important business was the official election of two new officers for the class which should strengthen our class organization. John Fenno, our most experienced past treasurer, agreed to fill in the remaining term of office, which is until our next reunion, left vacant because of the untimely passing of Bob Arnold.
After some difficulty obtaining a class newsletter editor because of some unfortunate problems, Bob Huke has agreed to take up the challenge. Bob lives in Norwich, Vt., and is an associate professor of geography at Dartmouth. Having just completed a book on the economy of the Philippines, where he just spent a year at the University on a Fulbright grant, Bob's writing hand should be in fine fettle. Incidentally, the book "Shadows on the Land: An Economic Geography of the Philippines" is now being used as a geography text in the major universities in the Philippines.
I just received word that Fred Comstock, one of our Thayer graduates, just joined the regional office of the Bureau of Public Roads in Homewood, Ill. Tad was named regional planning and research engineer. This office administers the interstate and federal aid highway programs in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Bertie, his wife, and their three daughters and son are becoming adjusted to life in the Midwest after previously always having lived in the East.
There are few positions or activities which Dr. Bob Hoekelman has missed during his residence in Canandaigua, N. Y., where he is the town's leading pediatrician. He was just named, along with three other prominent citizens, to the Advisory Board of that town's branch office of the Lincoln Rochester Trust Company, the largest bank in nearby Rochester. Bob is also president of the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce besides being on the staffs of several hospitals in the area.
Several issues ago I reported that BingAspinwall had married again here in New York and recently moved to Chicago. Bing and Val are living in an apartment on the north side of town as Bing's hours are quite demanding. Bing is Midwest Bureau Manager for the ABC television news.
Rick and Mary Landon moved to a house on Long Island after living in an apartment in Westchester for several years. With the children growing up I suspect they needed a little room to run.
After serving twenty years in the marine corps Major Bob Sebilian recently retired and is now living here in New York. When I am apprised of Bob's next area of endeavor I will let you know.
Just for the sake of a bit of reminiscence on the part of some of you I thought it might be interesting to mention that in the lead article on the front page of the Wall Street Journal last week the individual used as an example of a candidate using the polls in political campaigns was none other than our erstwhile classmate Joe Holzka, now a liberal young lawyer running in Staten Island for the State Senate.
It was with great sorrow that I noticed in the paper the other day of the passing in his home in New Jersey of John Alden's father, who was in the class of 1909 and for many years a prominent headmaster of a fine boys' preparatory school in New York City. Our deepest sympathy is extended to John.
I was happy to hear Don and Rae Kuhn moved into suburban Grosse Pointe, Mich., after living in Detroit for many years. Don is a salesman in the accounting machine division for Burroughs Corporation in Detroit. Last word I had they had two children, Ellen now six, and John, just four. Best of luck in the new house to the Kuhn family.
The class will probably be represented in a spectator capacity anyway at the Tokyo Olympics beginning next week, by SonnyDrury who is currently living in Tokyo. Sonny is now manager of the Far Eastern Crude Oil department for Gulf Oil.
Received word that the Steve Morrill family were transferred last spring from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh.
Also Jim and Nancy Mattoon are living in Needham, Mass., as G.E. transferred Jim to its Newton sales office.
I'm afraid that is about all there is room for this month. Hope to see some of you before the next edition.
