Some of us may have thought that celebrating the fifty-fifth reunion was some accomplishment but Charlie Thomas not only was graduated in 1910; he married Mary Dover Needham in Philadelphia in November of that same year. So thanks to the tardy arrival of a news clipping we have learned that Charlie and Mary were given the quite unusual and happy privilege of celebrating their fifty-fifth anniversary. If we had made a study of our records we might have sent a message of congratulations. Now we are doing that in a public way. We are proud of their long period of togetherness. The news story states that Charlie "has worked for the Bridgeport (Conn.) Post Publishing Company as a proofreader and has contributed to the editorial page for 44 years." We hope we are correct in stating that he is continuing active.
Another clipping, probably from a Grinnell College alumni publication, came to us from Ed Dusham via Andy Scarlett. It pictures our Leo Sherman in a group of three - all retired Grinnell faculty members who met in front of Goodnow Hall a while ago. In the caption - "Three gentlemen whose faces - and classroom manners - should be familiar to several decades' worth of alumni. Their years of Grinnell teaching total 110, their ages 258." Our Leo at 76 is the youngest but he ranks second in number of years teaching — 37. Ed writes that "King" Brady's son Frank is on the Penn State faculty from which Ed has retired. Frank '46 is teaching English. "It was a real pleasant year for me," writes Ed, "the drought spared me most of the work of mowing our big lawn - not even a single thunder shower. We usually get real boomers." Ed told Andy, "We did not get down to Florida last winter but are planning to go in February or March. It's hard to get the old man moving. If the weather keeps on like this we may not go. Haven't had any snow yet and the temperatures have been much above normal." But Ed wrote too soon about "no snow." These lines are being written on Sunday, Jan. 30, and from the radio all day, have come reports of snow and low temperatures all over the whole eastern and southern areas of the country. If it takes zero weather and snow as far south as Alabama, it sure will "get the old man moving."
Andy sent along a note from Chad. The Horace Chadbournes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the last day of 1965. Chad wrote, "It was more modest than we had intended, as I was, that day, on the rack with a cold and confined to quarters also. We did, however, open a small bottle of champagne and pledge to another fifty of companionship, which we trust you chemists will make possible by the discovery of the proper vitamin formula for adding years of life. I remember that it was Andy who argued for vitamins many years ago and really got us interested." Congratulations on the celebration, Chad.
Those Tenners who "make" Florida when winter comes, have one reunion after another, and it seems that there are Tenners coming and going, in numbers all winter. They pull off events in which they help those Tenners who have made the "Sunshine State" their all-year home. For instance, Ned Loveland, we learn, is reminding WhitEastman of a promise to run over from Sanibel to Fort Myers with his birding trip films to entertain the local Bird Club.
Brown Cooper wrote some time ago about running across a member of D '20 while "riding across Spain" last summer. The man was from our area in New York State and a good friend of mine. It's a small world.
In a letter to Mac Kendall, "Mike" Elliott wrote that the Elliotts would be off from Minnesota for Florida by early December. "My editing, which used to be moonlighting is now a real job, is pushing me pretty hard." Though officially retired from teaching, Mike has found that what looked to be a "little work on the side" has become almost a full-time addition to his day-by-day existence. Minnesota is a good place to be "from" this winter, Mike.
We regret having to record that another Tenner, Bob Woodcock, passed away recently after a long illness. An "In Memoriam" will appear in a later issue of the MAGAZINE.
