Soring has sprung, but not much 65 news has sprung with it. Unfortunately I havent seen or heard from many classmates, so this set of notes will be very brief.
I've received a bundle of news on BradHills recently. After graduation Brad en-listed the Army and served with the Headquarters Company, Special Troops at Fort Dix N. J., where he assisted in the preparation of a history of Fort Dix. Brad must have been in for only a six-month hitch though, for I just received word that he has been appointed sports editor for the "Valley News" in Lebanon. Brad's experience as Ernie Roberts' assistant in the Sports Information Office at Dartmouth should stand him in good stead in his new position.
I did run into Rich and Judy Beams and Jim and Sue Aiken in Burlington, Vt„ at a Supremes' concert a few weeks ago. Rich is at Medical School and Jim is doing work in pharmacology at UVM, and for this first year at least they are taking most of their classes together. Both seemed very happy with their studies and their skiing. Incidentally, while I was marveling to Rich at how often I had seen Paul Pringle this year (considering that he attends Michigan Law) Rich mentioned that, oh yeah, Paul had made the trip out for the Beams' New Year's Eve party. Pringle must be running a close second to Greyhound for mileage covered this year.
I traveled south for my vacation (one of the fringe benefits of teaching is many well spaced vacations) and ran into Dartmouth's most vociferous alumnus, Wah Wah Walsh, in Nassau. I also saw Ted Bracken there, taking his respite from the rigors of teaching and coaching at Mt. Hermon. Ted will spend another summer at Columbia working toward his M.A.T. in math.
More news on Pete Coker from North Carolina State: Pete was recently honored with the H. C. Kennett Sr., Athletic Award given annually to the outstanding senior athlete at N. C. State, and he was also the recipient of the John Spearles Award for sportsmanship. Pete plans to return to State next year to do graduate work in economics, and to assist with the freshman basketball program.
Meanwhile wedding bells continue to chime, this time for Charlie Kozloff -and Miss Cheryl Gemberling (Skids '65). The couple was married on Feb. 27 in Cherry Hill, N. J., and Phil Berger was one of their ushers. Charlie is a broker with Bache and Co. in New York City.
I've also heard rumblings from Minnesota concerning Jim Cooper's wedding on March 20, but so far this falls in the category of an unconfirmed rumor. How about it Coops?
John Bullock's engagement to Miss Gretchen Hageman has been announced by her parents. John is in his second year at Dartmouth Med, and will enter Harvard Med School in September. Gretchen will graduate from DePauw University in June. A June wedding is planned.
Jeff Amory, who will graduate in June, has been named as a Dartmouth Project Asia teaching fellow for 1966-68. Jeff will spend two years teaching English and a second subject of his own choice at Chung Chi College in Hong Kong, after an intensive six-week summer course in the Cantonese language and Chinese history and culture.
A recent note from Palmer "C.D." Wooglin says that he has dropped out of dental school and is now going to law school at night while he sells Art and Duke t-shirts and jocks on the black market during the day. He is looking forward to a shad fishing trip with Alvin Martin this spring.
Tom Mitchell is now one of the Peace Corps Volunteers working in community development in the cities and rural areas of Colombia, down in South America. Before heading there in February, he had sixteen weeks of training at California State College at Los Angeles— with intensive instruction in Spanish - and three weeks of field training in Puerto Rico. Tom's work in community development will evolve from the needs of the community to which he has been assigned.
News comes from the Dartmouth Rowing Club that a special fund has been established in memory of Mike Forney, a deceased member of the Class of 1965. Mike was a coxswain for the freshman heavies, and coach of the freshman lights before his death in the summer of 1963. The Forney Fund will be used to help support the Dartmouth crew, and a contribution on the part of any of you who knew Mike might be a very nice way to keep his memory alive.
That's all for now. Don't forget to drop something in the hat when Duff passes it later this month. We need everyone's help to make a good showing, so chip it up! Enjoy your spring, and let me hear from you.
