We scheduled our annual dinner this year to coincide with President Dickey's visit here The occasion was a banquet at the Colony Hotel on March 19. Included among the guests were a large group of alumni and their wives, some undergraduates who were home for spring vacation, and several applicants for next year's freshman class at Dartmouth. Frank Curtis '36, president of the club, presided at the head table and welcomed the guests. Ernie Grinnell '42, our current representative on the Alumni Council. introduced the guest of honor.

Mr. Dickey's speech dealt with the four "concerns" of Dartmouth in the training of students. These are (1) competence in intellectual endeavor; (2) conscience in applying moral attributes to that endeavor; (3) commitment to something worthwhile in the process of living; and (4) a comprehensive grasp of significant social, intellectual, and cultural phenomena, whether in a contemporary or historical context. To those of us who make a special point to read his formal addresses in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, some of the ideas he expressed were quite familiar. But there was much that was new, especially concerning continuing developments of the computer age in academic surroundings. It is always a particular pleasure to welcome Mr. Dickey here. This was his fifth visit, and we look forward to many more.

Accompanying Mr. Dickey were Cliff Jordan '45 and Charley Breed '51 of the Hanover staff of the Alumni Fund. These gentlemen conducted a conference with members of our club who are class agents for the Alumni Fund. No doubt those of us who attended that conference are now full-fledged experts in effective appeals to financial generosity. Theretofore, we had largely considered ourselves experts, instead, in the field of student recruitment. We recently rounded up approximately fifty candidates for admission to next year's freshman class. About thirty of the alumni participated in the interviewing process at various times. Come the middle of April, when the results of our efforts are recorded in the admissions data, we will have a better idea of how "expert" we are! Special credit in any event must go to Gene Gabienelli '53 and Jim Burke'59 for their splendid leadership in this work.

We regret that Fran Worcester '38 is leaving us, due to a transfer to Chicago. We have greatly enjoyed his company and friendship over these years, we wish him the best of luck, and hope he returns to visit us often.
