Davis Heads Alumni Council
JULY 1966

GEORGE I. DAVIS '28 of Glens Falls, N. Y., was elected president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council at its meeting in Hanover on June 17. He takes over leadership of Dartmouth's top alumni organization from Morrison G. Tucker '32 of Oklahoma City, Okla., who presided over three days of Council sessions during Reunion Week.

Mr. Davis is chairman of the board of the Glens Falls Insurance Company, with which he has been associated since graduation. He was elected a member-a-at-large of the Alumni Council two years ago, and was a member of the executive committee this past year. He served as secretary of the Dartmouth Clud of Glens Falls from 1938 to 1942 and was vice-president of the General Alumni Association in 1961-62. Mr. Davis is a trustee of Skidmore College and Albany Medical College, and is a former Army officer, having won the Legion of Merit as a lieutenant colonel in World War II.

To serve as vice-president for the coming year the Alumni Council elected David D. Williams '35 of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., vice president of the National Bank of Detroit, who has been a member of the Council since 1963 representing the Central States region. J. Michael McGean '49, Secretary of the College, was reelected secretary. The Council's executive committee includes the elected officers and four other members: Henry J. McCarthy '31 of Marblehead, Mass.; Philip B. Swain '37 of Seattle, Wash.; Edward F. Perrin '38 of Hartford, Conn.; and Proctor H. Page Ir. '42 of Burlington, Vt.

As new members-at-large to serve three-year terms until June 30, 1969 the Alumni Council elected A. Kelvin Smith '20 of Cleveland, Ohio; Howland H. Sargeant '32 of Washington, D. C.; Frederick S. Beebe '35 of New York City; John C. Osborn '45 of Rochester, N. Y.; and Paul R. Staley '51 of Long Beach, Calif. Elected to represent the faculty on the Council was Harold L. Bond '42, Professor of English.

As chairman of the executive committee of the General Association of Alumni, Harrison F. Dunning '30 of Philadelphia will be an ex-officio member of the Council for the coming year.

In other actions, the Council elected Robert W. Gibson '39 of Minneapolis to a second three-year term as an alumni member of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council; elected Robert D. Harrington '26 of Worcester, Mass., as alumni representative on the Board of Overseers of the Hanover Inn; and elected Ralph N. Hill Jr. '39 of Burlington, Vt., to another three-year term as alumni repre- sentative on the Board of Proprietors of The Dartmouth.

The Alumni Council's annual June gathering was again attended by a very high percentage of its members. Forty-three of the Council's fifty members, from Maine to California, were present for this 112th meeting of the Council; and to their number were added thirty former members and seven new members who were to take office on July 1.

The Council program had a rainy beginning when Wednesday's reception scheduled for the President's garden had to be transferred to the Top of the Hop. From this dry, indoor spot the Councilors, their wives, members of the faculty, and College officers moved to Thayer Hall for the Council's annual dinner, presided over by Mr. Tucker.

The principal after-dinner talk, center- ing on undergraduate affairs, was given by Thaddeus Seymour, Dean of the Col- lege. Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Alumni Council's highest honor, the Dartmouth Alumni Award, to three graduates of the College: Sumner D. Kilmarx '22 of New York City, Leon I. Rothschild '24 of Los Angeles, and N. Page Worthington '33 of Baltimore, Md. The account of their awards, with full citations, and of the Alumni Award made previously at the Commencement luncheon to Prof. John B. Stearns 'l6 appears on the next page.

Meetings of the various Council committees on Thursday morning and an informal luncheon at the Inn preceded a session of the full Council that afternoon. The agenda included reports on committee discussions and action of the morning and a program led by Prof. John W. Masland, Provost of the College, dealing with Trustee Planning Committee studies and other academic developments.

Wet weather once again cancelled an outdoor event, and the barbecue scheduled for the Bema became an informal indoor affair in Alumni Hall of Hopkins Center. Many Council members and wives attended the Thursday evening Dartmouth Players' performance of Once Upon a Mattress.

Another meeting of the full Council on Friday morning featured President Dickey's wide-ranging discussion of Colleae affairs. Other speakers were George H Colton '35, Director of Development, who became Vice President of the College on July 1, and Nichol M. Sandoe Jr. '45 Director of Public Affairs. Mr. Colton discussed current planning for the coming capital fund campaign and Mr. Sandoe explained tentative plans and proposals for marking Dartmouth's Bicentennial in 1969.

Along with the election of 1966-67 officers at this final session, Council committee assignments for the coming year were announced. Of top importance was the acceptance of the Alumni Fund chairmanship by Ralph Lazarus '35 of Cin-cinnati, president of Federated Department Stores. He succeeds Rupert C. Thompson Jr. '28 of Providence, R. I., in this crucial alumni post.

Other committee chairmen for the coming year are: Bequest and EstatePlanning, Truman T. Metzel '23, Winnetka, Ill.; Class Giving, James D. Elleman '43, Morristown, N. J.; Enrollmentand Admissions, F. Warren Miller Jr. '40, Springfield, Mass.; Public Relations, Eugene Katz '2B, New York City; Regional Organization, Delwyn J. Worthington '26, Tucson, Ariz.; Academic Affairs, Shepard A. Stone '29, New York City; Nominating, George N. Farrand '33, New York City.
