I'm thankful that we have a few literate members of the Class who remember the Secretary once in a while. Here's a great example from Bob Baumrucker: "Keep watching the travelogues. Should you notice a Zulu wearing a black ski parka with a gold-colored lining or a western shirt with pearl buttons, jot down the name of his tribe, as there will probably be the balance of my gear - lost on safari. The Chief of the South African police (plus the president of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Jan Smuts Jr., etc.) was at my farewell party, however, and he assures me they will make a kraal to kraal search, if necessary. Besides the 26,000-odd miles in transit, I made about 4800 miles internally in South Africa - from 10,000 feet up in the Drakensberg to 10,000 feet down in the gold mines, and their gleaming modern cities and vast teeming game preserves in between, I must say that their handling of the racial problem plus the more creative aspect of how to live leaves our 'leadership' looking very primitive indeed. My friends will now be visiting me in San Francisco, and there will be many things I will not be able to explain to them, even if the Hippies have cleared out by then."

Here's another from Shep "Timber" Wolff of Pomfret, Vt.: "All's well up here with Harriet and me. We're making good progress and so far it's very comfortable in an old-fashioned way. Harriet says at least we have indoor plumbing. So far the McCarthys, and Stecks, and McCords, and JohnnieChamberlain (Chicago) and Bunny Bertram and the Len Clarks have visited us and have been rather rocked at the vision of our mansion. Len and Dottie Clark were up this way visiting Len's family around Peacham and Stowe, Vt., and stayed with us a few days. Then Harriet and I followed them to New Jersey, taking the trip in easy stages, stopping for antiquing and other snoopings." I can see Shep breaking the ice in the bucket in the A.M. while Harriet cowers under the patchwork quilt waiting for the stove to warm up the bedroom!

Jack Benson filled me in on the Lake Morey affair at Penn weekend, which has already been described to you in Bill Steck's newsletter. Hank McCarthy will be chairman again for next year. I quote Jack: "There were also some new faces at the Harvard game yesterday: Tom Patterson for one, who was with Charlie Nims. I hadn't seen Larry Allen for a while although he may be a regular, same for SteveWilliams. The others were Moore, Chase, Clough, Peterson, Clarkson, McCarthy, Borkum, Jack Bean, Mai Hall, Ori Hobbs, Spence Miller, Kel Wiles, and probably some I've missed." Thanks, Jack. I spent that day in bed with a virus, and couldn't even get rid of my tickets that A.M.

Received a short note from Bill Steck in which he asks, "Who are the Red Sox?" Bill, they were the ones that were, and will be!

Keith "Red" Fox is now divisional vice president in Pittsburgh for Liberty Mutual Insurance Companies. Keystoners, take note.

A trio of thirty-oners on the first team for the Third Century Fund: Bob Oelman,Ralph Hunter, Sam Groves. We'll all be on the first team before it's over.

Am hoping you will take a minute to drop Rog Donner a note at Apt. 801, 399 State Street, Albany, N. Y. 12210. He lost a leg in an operation recently, and would be just delighted to hear from you.

Meanwhile, 38 years ago on campus: Billy Alton was elected captain of the boxing team; the Nugget installed talking movie equipment, thus knocking Joe Choate, yours truly, and others out of live piano playing at $1.50 per show. Horace Schneider and Brant McCullough master-minded the '33 Green Book. Abner Epstein Dean (who else!) was elected art editor of the Jacko; WaltGehring was manager of intramural athletics. All starting lineups of the big Green football team contained a majority of thirty-oners. 78 student automobiles were registered on campus, a new high.

Mates, please write before the postal rates go up.
