Let's take a look behind the scenes of our class organization. Here's a letter from John Cogswell: "I'm in the throes of organizing my team of class agents for the 1970 Appeal. I've had a real good response so far from a perfectly wonderful group of Thirty-oners (are there any other kinds of Thirty-oners?). Enclosed are four responses with news of interest." And here are the enclosures: from Vance Dickennan, "I am glad to accept another go-round on the Alumni Fund, because I'm sure I can do better than last year. May and June found me struggling to locate and train a successor for my job as manager of the Barcelona Hotel here (San Diego, Calif.). I shall not have that distraction this year and hope to assist you more effectively. I would dwell at some length on the pleasures of retirement, but my wife recently bought some shares of AT&T so please continue to work diligently and make the price of her stock go up." From Ralph Maynard: "Shall be glad to serve and try to improve on our 80% showing last year (4 out of 5 in and near Lehigh Valley, Pa.). Still working and traveling but enjoy writing and talking with the others in our small group and trying to talk them into springing for a few bucks. Family fine. Stephen now 15 and a football player. He will be college class of '77. Tom 10 and class of '81." From Bunce Clarkson: "Will help as per usual. All's well. Glad to have '69 in back of us. Just one more step nearer to complete retirement. Sold out my lumber business (Worcester, Mass.). Produced (!!) the cutest little granddaughter imaginable. Looking forward to 1970 as a banner year." From Bob Dickey: "I'll be glad to work on the Alumni Fund again. My record was good last year mainly because of the mailings from Hanover as I was in the throes of winding up my job at Monsanto (Everett, Mass.). I expect to have more time this year. I have set up a law office in my own home -for work in the fields of chemical patents and government contracts. However I'm trying to hold my clients down so that I won't work more than 20 hours a week, leaving time for play, Alumni Fund, etc."
Johnny Cogswell said he sent out 58 letters to prospective agents — 39 have responded to date; only four refused and they each had perfectly legitimate reasons. Aside from the four responses quoted - the other 35 ranged from just plain "yep" to "thanks for the opportunity and of course I'll be glad to help in the 1970 campaign." That's how the inner organization of our class is working - behind the scenes.
Frank Hodson writes: "We're off to California (from Oak Ridge, N. J.) for the holidays with Suzanne. Both of us have done a lot of moving around this year - even got to Copenhagen again - one of our favorites."
From Don Ewing down in the D. C. area: "Had a good chat with Lloyd Wilson a couple of days ago —he seems to have the situation well in hand."
Fred and Ruth Slaughter hated to miss last fall's tailgate rallies and promise to try harder this year.
From the island of Nantucket, Dick Denby is doing some work on the Third Century Fund with the 12 alumni living on the island.
Holly Vernon notes with pride: "I find it necessary to keep the nose to the old grindstone in order to finance Dartmouth! Son No. 1 graduated in 1964, son #2 in 1966, son #3 now enrolled as an undergrad, son #4 at Tabor Academy hopefully directed toward Dartmouth. Now you know what has kept Dartmouth green!"
Ray Robinson's son Peter graduated Phi Beta Kappa last June and is now at Georgetown Law School enjoying it.
New address of Ralph Charlton is worth comment - write to him at Hardscrabble Lane, RD 2, Newfoundland, N. J. 07435. Is it uphill coming in or going out, Ralph?
Angie and Ernie Moore took the Caribbean cure over the Holidays a la "SS Victoria," which Trudy and I did last year but didn't this year. Jack Leuthner, now living in Irvington, N. Y., did last year but didn't this year also, but instead sojourned in Florida for two weeks, which we didn't either. Ernie sent the Aquinas Bulletin from Hanover in which the following concerns Rose and Hank McCarthy's boy: "On Thanksgiving Day Father Leo (McCarthy) and Father Bill (Nolan) had eighteen of our students as Aquinas House guests for dinner over at the Norwich Inn - then back to Aquinas House for the rest of the afternoon to enjoy color TV.... Father Leo is totally selfless ... a priest after God's Own Heart."
John Benson's son and namesake, John K. Benson Jr., has been appointed to division head of the automated customer services division, State Street Bank and Trust Company, Boston.
Mildred and Frank Monroe were among several retiring employees and their wives feted at a dinner party in Waltham. Mass. Frank has been affiliated with the U. S. Corps of Engineers as realty officer on claims, for 23 years. He was presented with a golf sweater and golf balls and is now waiting for the snow to disappear off the local golf courses.
So am I.
