ROBERT A. (RED) ROLFE '31 announced last month that he plans to retire as Dartmouth's Director of Athletics next July 1. He said he was making this move because for some time he had desired to give more attention to his own personal affairs.
President Dickey, in paying tribute to Rolfe, spoke of his lifetime devotion to Dartmouth, his contributions to intercollegiate athletics, and his strong sense of fair play both on and off the field.
President Dickey also announced that Seaver Peters '54, currently Associate Director of Athletics for physical education and intramural sports, had been named as Rolfe's successor. As Director of Athletics, Peters will be the principal administrative officer concerned with intercollegiate athletics, physical education, and intramural sports. He will serve as a member of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council and chairman of its executive committee. He will also be Dartmouth's representative on the administrative committee of the Ivy League.
Rolfe, former star third baseman for the New York Yankees, returned to Hanover in 1954 to take charge of the College's athletic programs. In his nine active seasons with the Yankees they won six pennants and he was selected as the club's "all-time, all-star" third baseman. While manager of the Detroit Tigers (1947-52), he was named "Manager of the Year" in 1950.
He also coached baseball and basketball at Yale, the Toronto Huskies professional basketball team, and spent one season with the New York Yankees as a coach.
His successor, Seaver Peters, is a native of Melrose, Mass. He was a three-year letterman in hockey and captained the team in his senior year.
Peters returned to Dartmouth in 1959 as Acting Associate Director of Athletics with responsibilities for budgeting and financial affairs of the athletic department. He was Assistant Comptroller of the College from 1960 to 1963, and in 1963 he became Associate Director of Athletics.
He has been active in community and civic affairs in Hanover, serving as chairman of the Hanover Finance Committee, treasurer of the Lebanon Regional Airport Authority, and chairman of a study committee on reorganization of Hanover's town government.
