From Medomak, Me., via Charley Widmayer comes news of "Red" Boutilier: "I do a little free-lance work (photography) for magazines and trade journals, etc., but haven't done as much as I wish yet as we have been concentrating (the son and I) on developing this 116-acre seashore farm. This means building a new concrete underbarn and maintaining twelve head of breeding stock besides building wood lot roads, etc. At 49, I don't feel as much like working nights on writing and photography as I used to"after a day of physical but health-giving labor. It must give health as so far, it gives little else, but we enjoy it."
A change of address for Col. (Ex?) William C. Chamberlin reports him as an associate professor and assistant dean at Northwestern University. Perhaps more on this later.
Our peripatetic airways pilot, Ev Wood, now checks in from Kai Tak Airport, Hong Kong and reports of his new doings
"Our mission here is to fly American soldiers from Saigon to such rest and recreation spots as Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, etc., as long as the tragic situation continues there. All of us must hope it will not continue for the duration of my twoyear assignment. Anyway it's one of the last missions I truly wish to perform from the cockpit."
Last month I mentioned that Jim Cotter had the sub-contract for the plumbing in the new Hanover Inn; now, after a short stop at the Motor Lodge late in January, Jim lets it be known that he is also working for the Jackson Construction Co. on the new Tuck School dormitory under the aegis of Dean Karl Hill.
Vic Johnson, in Savannah, Ga., instead of furnishing me news of himself has family news instead: "My stepson, Dana Oliver, is working for Sox Calder in the Training Division of the personnel department at the big local plant of Union-Camp Corporation, but I am sure Sox is unaware of his great luck in this regard."
A very flossy annual report came my way from Wilson & Co., meat and sporting goods, Chicago. The chief interest for me in it is the listing in not too small print of Francis X. Reilly Jr. as treasurer. I haven't seen Fat Fran since my last visit to the Windy City a couple of years ago in a blizzard, not too dissimilar to the recent one this winter. I can report the Reilly family flourishing in every possible way.
Returning to Karl Hill, professor of Industrial Management and Dean of the Tuck School, he has been named to the Industrial Park Authority in New Hampshire by Governor King and his Executive Council.
Ted and Peg Hunter, having left the environs of Hanover, as previously reported in this space, are now firmly ensconced in Raleigh, N. C., where Ted is director of the Raleigh office of Lyles, Bissett, Carlisle, and Wolff.
On the social side, Bill Watson Jr., and wife announce the engagement of their daughter. Phyllis, to Mr. James Hildreth Rogers of Water Mill, L. I., N. Y. She is a graduate of Emma Willard School and Elmira College.
Just to show that sometimes people in the Ad. Bldg. do earn their pay, Gil Tanis was recently in Pensacola, Fla., for the biennial meeting of the Association of NROTC Colleges at the Naval Air Station. Representatives of 52 colleges and universities from across the nation attended the three-day conference. Vice Admiral Alexander S. Heyward Jr., chief of Naval Air training, was sponsor and host for the meeting.
Even though Hanover is blanketed with snow today (Feb. 3), spring is not too far away, and with it the opening of another Alumni Fund Drive. It may well be that over a period of years some members of the class have fallen into a rut as far as the amount of their donations are concerned. Just as it is advisable to re-examine one's finances periodically in view of the continuing growth of the economy, so it might be well to reconsider the proportion going to charitable purposes, and primarily, of course, Dartmouth. There may also, obviously, be growing responsibilities along other lines, but in some cases, the College deserves a boost. And remember, that the sooner you get your check in, the easier it is for Marty King and his cohorts.
