Hobe Rockwell starts this column out with an interesting question. He asks: "Will our children defend our country as well as our fathers' children did?" Without any profound analysis of the whole subject, mostly because of incapability, your editor replies: "Sure." Hobe now says that making money is his "hobby," because he didn't make much when it was part of his work. The Rochester Rockwell laments reaching the age of 45. You know. This thought permeates much of the correspondence received lately. What's wrong with being 45? I wouldn't give it up for anything; anymore than I'd quit a good football game at halftime. Hobe also hopes that someone will bring us up to date on Willy Thomas, whom he has not heard mention of since 1945. The Rockwell family includes five daughters: the last being Priscilla, 26 months. Father is Manager of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Office in the cold, upper New York community.

Another insurance executive is the Baron himself. Carl von Pechman is Secretary of the Aetna Casualty and Surety Company. Our boy is in charge of the company's Inland and Ocean Marine Department. He writes the following: "I don't know where the time has gone since I first announced to myself I would write you frequently. We are going through a major reorganization of our company. Since the first of the year my hobby has been my work. This past July, the Sox Calders went to Europe, and we occupied their Madison, Conn., beachhouse." Baron goes on to paint a rigorous picture of Work, Work and More Work. I'd hate to wish it on him, but if he doesn't watch out he'll be made president of the insurance company. Then we'll never hear from him again until John Dickey has him head up fund raising.

The Ted Hunters have a little girl, Margaret Greenough, now four and one half. Ted is a Hanover Rotarian, a newcomer and president of the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The latter connection took the Hunters to the A. I. A. Convention in San Francisco last spring.

Only those who know you well can address you properly. Writing me, Howie Fogg, a descriptive adjective of the individual as well as a last name, simply began: "Dear Bulb Brain." There was also a warm "Howdy-do and how's wit G. E.?" An industrial illustrator, Howie had for many years been the artist for the American Locomotive Company, Schenectady, N. Y. Howie says that now he is a strictly freelance artist for railroads or anyone who wants a "purty" picture. He has put out a railroad record album, and he, Margot and the three boys are living it up out in Boulder, Colo. He writes: "In all seriousness, may I put in the strongest possible vote of confidence in a liberal arts, unspecialized college education. I am increasingly appalled by engineers who can't read; lawyers who can't spell, and scientists who can't write. Dartmouth is a prime example of all that is fine in liberal arts training and living. It deserves the full support and endorsement of every graduate." Amen.

Dick Gilbert, controller of the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, has been presented the "Systems Man of the Year" Award. The presentation is made each year by the Systems and Procedures Association of America. Dick is a member of the Association's St. Louis chapter and is responsible for the establishment of the Automation Center at McDonnell. In recent years he also has been active in research work and has written several articles on management and automation. His ability in his chosen profession has earned Dick a place in "Who's Who in Commerce and Industry."

Ted Thome has been named to the Public Relations Staff of Pan American. The SandyMills are taking a breather in Jamaica, lucky ones. William R. Watson is in the insurance business at 3903 Upton Avenue, Toledo, Ohio. Shorty Barrett (J. Clark) is Director of Trade Relations for McCormick and Co.. Baltimore, Md. He's single. That's not bad at 45, is it Hobe? Clarkie digs big for the Colts, the Orioles and the Republicans. That's another thing that comes over big in correspondence. Am I still the only Democrat in the class?

Murray Levinsohn looked real good when we stopped in his Asbury Park, N. J., haberdashery a few weeks ago. He also reported business pretty good in the shop he took over from his dad some years ago. A native of the seashore town, Murray roomed with Roy Block at Hanover.

Bud Lynch is one of those doctors that every family welcomes down in the Bridgeport, Conn., area. He's a pediatrician in Westport and among his patients is the family of Whitey Mays. I hear many fine things about him from the many General Electric people in that area. He's got some pediatrics at home too. Let's see. There's Franklin, Lizann, Timothy, Christopher and Michael. Boy, Elsie and the Doc have really taken this pediatrics seriously.
