Dartmouth took its best swimming team in modern history to New Haven February 18, swam one of the fastest medley relays in the nation - and lost both the meet and the relay event to Yale, a team generally regarded as the best dual-meet team in America today.

Final score was 76-19. It was Karl Michael's team's second loss of the season against six wins. The other loss was on January 28 to Princeton by a 59-36 score.

Victories during February came against Army and Cornell. The former was a match which Dartmouth could well have been excused for losing, since the West Pointers present a solid team and own an enviable record. Army was undefeated last year and is defending Eastern swim champion. Cornell provided the Dartmouth Carnival crowds something to cheer about and gave Brad Lindeblad '68, Hollywood, Fla., a chance to break the varsity record in the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:13.77 time.

The Yale meet gave Dartmouth only two first places. Carl Robinson '69 of Rye, N. Y., set a new Dartmouth record in winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.4. Captain Tony Dalrymple '67 of Goffstown, N. H., tied another record with a 47.6 timing in the first leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, which event Yale won, and Marc Labovitz '69 of Philadelphia won the diving.

"It was the worst licking Yale has ever given us," Michael said, "but we can still hold our heads up. This also was the first time this year Yale got a workout. They swam all their top boys against us, and they were swimming several events."

Columbia and Navy remained on the schedule, and Dartmouth was favored to win both before the Eastern championship meet March 9-11 in New Haven.
