The official kickoff of the 1967 Alumni Fund in the metropolitan New York area was held on March 28 at the Commodore Hotel. Class Agent Paul Cleaveland journeyed down from Nashua, N. H., to greet the '36 agents who were in attendance: KirkLiggett, Gil Balkam, Blair Rainey, BrintSchorer and Dick Dorrance. President Dickey delivered the principal address and outlined twelve areas in which Dartmouth excels. Dinner meetings are always difficult for commuters, but Kirk Liggett's daily jaunt from Philadelphia to lower Manhattan just about sets the record. His two sons, Charles and Kevin, had just returned from a three-week spring vacation trip to Germany with a group from their high school. Paul Cleaveland left after the dinner for Boston where he planned to attend the Boston area dinner for the Fund Agents. His son Charles has finished his military duties and has enrolled for the third term at Dartmouth enhancing the Hanover scene with his lovely Korean wife. Charles will be a member of the junior class in September.
Dick Dorrance, as editor of Tithe, rarely writes about himself, but I can report that he still finds time to operate his short wave radio station, W2LEJ, and talks with other hams around the world. He recently carried on a conversation with the American ambassador in Teheran, Iran. His son Sturges inherited this bent for radio communication and is now employed by WKING in Seattle, Wash. In New York Dick is president of Dorrance and Company, specialists in advertising promotion. He has also earned an enviable reputation as a gourmet cook - after business hours, of course.
Although West Hartford is home to BrintSchorer, he couldn't-miss the opportunity to attend the New York meeting. He was sporting an exclusive Dartmouth bow tie made especially for him by Campion. Brint and Doris have a new daughter-in-law. In February, their son Brinton Jr. was married to Kathleen T. Montgomery of Manchester, Conn. Young Brint is a graduate of the Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts. Now that spring is here Brint is anxious to open his house at Lake Winnipesaukee where Dick Morton, Art Green, and Des Stewart also maintain summer homes.
Laurie Robbins '66, son of Don andAnne Robbins, recently announced his engagement to Cynthia Lewis of Concord, N. H. Laurie is in his first year at the (M.I.T.) Sloan School of Management. Cynthia, a graduate of Russell Sage where she majored in biochemistry, is a research assistant at the Beth Israel Hospital in Brookline, Mass. A June wedding is planned. In March Don and Anne spent Freshman Parents Weekend with their daughter Patty at Elmira College. In Hanover during March they also held Freshman Fathers Weekend. Art Appleton joined his son James and Dr.Al Meyer visited with his son Charles.
In Northboro, Mass., on March 7, StanWalker sought reelection to his third term on the School Committee. Stan is a lawyer and graduate of Boston University Law School. He is the father of five children and during this current school year a foreign exchange student, Jean Guarrive of Arras, France, is making her home with the Walkers and attending Algonquin Regional High School. Let's hope the citizens of Northboro had the good sense to return Stan to office. In Morris County, N. J., Spence Johnson was seeking election to the Pequannock School Board in February - results on this are not reported. Spence has been active in Pequannock Township civic affairs.
During the winter months Hermann Nunnemacher left Wisconsin to visit the West Coast sales representatives of his company, Galland Henning Nopak, manufacturers of fluid power equipment. In Portland, Oregon, he spent an evening with Jack Patrick, president of Patrick Lumber Co. The Patricks' "Eagle Nest" home has a breathtaking view of Portland to the east. Herm sent a clipping he received from Hart Beardsley's mother in Springfield, Vermont. Hart started Dartmouth with the class of '36, but graduated in '37. He was recently appointed president of the Bowater Power Co., Ltd. in Deer Lake, Newfoundland. Previously he was with the British Newfoundland Corp. and the Newfoundland and Labrador Power Commission where he was general manager of the Baie D'Espoir Hydro-electric Project. Another recent promotion reported in the press was the elevation of Larry Marx to executive vice president of the United Merchants and Manufacturers, Inc., a large concern embracing Robert Hall Clothes and Cohama Fabrics.
If you are vacationing in Mexico, it might be comforting to know there is a friendly face at the American Embassy in Mexico City. Hank Dearborn has been transferred there by the State Department from his post in Bogota, Colombia. Another drastic change of address has arrived for Joe Jayne who has exchanged Ranch Santa Fe, California, for Orient, Long Island, N. Y. Dr.Bruce Smith of Barrington, R. I., has merely changed street addresses within that town. Three younger children are home with Dale and Bruce while their oldest son, Craig, is in the Air Force. Craig attended the University of Rhode Island and was married in May 1966 to Cynthia Carpenter.
A month or two ago we reported that Jack Arnold had returned to New York after nine years in the midwest. He is eastern sales manager for Recognition Equipment, which according to lack is the leading manufacturer of optical character readers - the hottest thing in the data processing picture today.
Congratulations are in order for RaphaelHillyer who recently celebrated his twentieth anniversary as a member of the Juilliard Quartet. Raphael was one of the two members who have been with the group since its founding. The anniversary concert in New York was a musical highlight and Aaron Copland joined the group for the playing of his 1937 Sextet for String Quartet, Clarinet and Piano.
