During the week of April 24 Dick Hefler was in New York City from San Francisco attending to the financial affairs of American Potash and Chemical and visiting with old friends. Some members of the Class Executive Committee met Dick at the Dartmouth Club for cocktails and also took this opportunity to' discuss some business to' be placed on the agenda for Officers' Weekend in Hanover on May 12-13. Gil Balkam was the host for Dick Morton, Gib Sykes, Bob Prentice, Larry Marx, Paul Guibord, Frank Kappler, and Art Levin. Gib Sykes looked the healthiest with a golden tan acquired at Guarda Mercia where he managed to land a 120-pound tarpon. Larry Marx had the second best tan which came from crewing with Bud Mosbacher '43 on the trial sails of the yacht, "Constellation." Larry is chairman of the Westchester Classic Golf Tournament at the Westchester Country Club. The first prize is $50,000, which indicates why it attracts the nation's best golfers. The rest of us looked rather pallid, for spring was very late in arriving in New York.
Dr. Bill and Ann Sicher will be in Hanover this month for the graduation of their son, David, who recently announced his engagement to Miss Francee Rakatansky of Providence, R. I. The Massachusetts' Society of Certified Public Accountants recently elevated Edward Higbee - the office of vice-president. Ed is a partner in the firm of Lybrand, Ross Bros. & Montgomery in their Boston Office. Ed and Helen reside in nearby Hingham where their children, Richard and Janet, attend the local schools. Their older son, John, is a member of the Class of '69 at Dartmouth. Now that the pleasant weather is here, Ed will be indulging in his favorite pastime, sailing.
Another member of the Class is much involved with the sea in his business. GeorgePeck manufactures and sells cargo lashings, fittings, and containers for cargo vessels. George is active on the Board of Trustees of the Hewlett School for Girls in East Islip. Ed Redington is also a member of this Board and acts as its treasurer.
There was a flurry of '36 activity in Waterbury, Conn., this spring and I appreciate Morrie Paine's thoughtfulness in sending along the news items. Morrie is an executive of the Howland-Hughes Department Store in that city. Ed McGrath, public relations director of the Connecticut State Highway Department, is a member of the Waterbury Beautification Commission and is expending his efforts to have the Commission endorse the building of a new high school in an undeveloped section of Hamilton Park. The Waterbury Bar Association bestowed its first annual Liberty Bell Award on Morris Stein, president of Torrington Supply Corp. The award was established to honor an area resident who has exemplified outstanding citizenship qualities through service to the community. Space doesn't permit the list of Morrie's services to Waterbury which indicates the Bar Association picked the right man for their first award. The Northeastern Loggers Congress at South Egremont, Mass., in April gave its outstanding education award to Zebulon White, associate dean and director of professional studies at the Yale School of Forestry. Under Dean White's direction 19 sessions of an industrial forest seminar have been held at Yale, and the Universities of California, Washington, Minnesota, and Toronto.
John Sullivan has been active in Massachusetts in his capacity as a member of the eleven-man executive committee of the State Board of Education established by the Willis Harrington Act. This spring he addressed the Acton P.T.A. on the establishment of public kindergartens in Massachusetts recommended by the Willis Report which led to the Act. John is a vice president of the Shawmut National Bank in Boston.
Pete Fitzherbert was in New York City in April to attend the annual meeting of the American Insurance Association of which he is a member of the Board of Directors. Arnold and Gloria Hatch will be in Northampton this June for the graduation of their daughter, Patricia, from Smith College. Arnie is a registered representative with Bache & Co., stockbrokers, in Albany, N. Y.
From New Orleans we have another entry in the youngest child contest. George andMaxie Allen report a son, Dean, six months old. He joined an already bursting household of seven other children which puts the Aliens among the front runners for the large family derby, but behind Dr. Tom Monagan's ten children in Waterbury, Conn., and Wilson MacInfire's nine offspring in East Stroudsburg, Pa. The MacIntires have been raised in the lovely Poconos where Mac is connected with the General Hospital of Monroe County. His oldest son, Richard, is now attending East Stroudsburg State College after a three-year tour of duty in the Army. Two sons are presently in the service - Joseph in the U.S. Navy and Bruce in the Coast Guard.
Dave Camerer '37 has written a novel, "25th Reunion," which has just been released. It is worth your attention and will probably be discussed in greater length in TITHE.
Best wishes for a wonderful summer without too many happenings, be-ins, or love-ins - just a nice old-fashioned summer.
