March is the month to get the last run out of the skis, a final thrill on the snowmobile or a Caribbean tan to impress the neighbors. Spring is just a robin away. Spring also brings out the prospective brides. Martha Guernsey of Weymouth, Mass., a senior at Colby Junior College, has announced her engagement to Ens. James S. Hoffmann USNR, son of the William Hoffmanns of New Vernon, N. J. Jim graduated from Dartmouth last June and is now serving aboard the heavy cruiser, "Newport News," in the western Pacific. In New Canaan, Conn., Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Chivvis announced the engagement of their daughter, Cynthia, to David Bayles, son of Roger andLois Bayles. Cynthia is a senior at Wilson College. Her father is marketing coordinator for Union Carbide and second vice president of the Chemical Specialty Manufacturers Association. David attended Williston Academy and is in his senior year at Indiana University. His father, Roger, is executive vice president of finance for the Home Insurance Co. The wedding is planned for July.

Student involvement is a hot issue these days and a group of 100 Dartmouth under-graduates recently published "Dartmouth Course Guide" which offers a critique of 150 courses in all departments as well as editorial commentaries on campus issues such as ROTC, coeducation, calendar, etc. Three alumni who have distinguished themselves in higher education were asked to contribute - one of these is Louis T. Benezet, president of the Claremont College complex in California. If you are interested in this publication, it can be obtained from the College for $2.00. The Benezets should be in the east this June to see their daughter, Laura, graduate from Smith College. The coming college year in Hanover should be most interesting. Under the coeducational program 20 Smith girls will spend the academic year at Dartmouth as exchange students. It is one way to solve the traffic problem on Route 91 to Northampton.

Ross and Nancy Martindale will be attending a graduation this June at Morris Harvey College in West Virginia. Their son, Fred, will be graduating as will his wife, Sandra. Their other son, Ross Jr., is an officers' assistant at the Montclair National Bank in West Caldwell, N. J. He was married in September '67 to Nancy Stone and they live in Upper Montclair. Ross is still commuting to NBC in Manhattan.

Frank and Gerry Kappler are also making plans for a June graduation. They will travel to Denver to see their son, Frank, graduated from the University of Denver Law School. This will give them an opportunity to vacation on the west coast and see the sights from Vancouver to Baja California.

Vin and Gib Wentworth are now settled in Tantallon, Md., after leaving the west coast. Vin is vice president of marketing services for Farrington Manufacturing Co. in Falls Church, Va. Their daughter, Susan, a graduate of Skidmore in 1967, will finish her graduate work at the University of Arizona this June. The Wentworths have two grandchildren - William Henry Went-worth and Pamela Woodberry.

If you are a numismatist, you will be interested to know we have a classical one in our midst. From November 26 to December 12 the Dartmouth College Museum exhibited ancient Greek coins from the collection of Arthur Appleton. Although few in number they represented some of the most beautiful Greek coins in existence with particular emphasis on the coins of Sicily, Rhodes, the Selucid Kings as well as several Ptolemaic coins. The most beautiful is the Dekadrachm of Syracuse, by Kimon, struck in 413 B.C. to commemorate the victory over Athens. Most of us will be giving our loose coins to the government on April 15.

Samuel Rhodes, violist, will join the Juilliard String Quartet as of July, 1969 in place of Raphael Hillyer, the violist who has been with the quartet since its founding 23 years ago. As a member of the quartet Raphael has travelled throughout the world. The new home of the Juilliard School of Music at Lincoln Center, New York, is scheduled for completion this year.

The American Management Association held its annual EDP conference in New York March 10-12. This year the keynote was "EDP Management in the 70's." The impressive list of guest speakers and discussion leaders included men who have been with electronic data processing and the computer since its beginning - among them Bill Ferguson, Director, Management Services and Information, at the Carborundum Co. in Niagara Falls, N. Y. Bill helped install at Carborundum one of the first Univac Computer Systems for centralized accounting and inventory control. At the 42nd Annual Western Trust Conference on the west coast in November Duncan Newell, vice president, Trust Department, Valley National Bank, Phoenix, Ariz., was a member of a session panel. Although the caption under the picture of Dune and his three panel associates didn't mention the subject, it had to be money.

April is always a month of anticipation for high school seniors desiring admission to colleges next September. Ed Chamberlain's position during this month of acceptances and rejections must be in the nightmare category. Stoney Jackson, who worked with Ed at the Dartmouth Admission Office for several years, isn't on hand to help out. Stoney's symptoms of multiple sclerosis are being treated at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in White River Junction where he has been a patient for the past year.

The Third Century Fund is rolling along - another Alumni Fund is under way - your officers hope you will respond to these appeals. It isn't too early to plan for your summer vacation - Alumni College will be held in Hanover August 17-28.
