Pre-Pine Tree Fortieth Class activity was the New York dinner April 26 honoring Bob Stevens as he completes his tenth year as '27's chairman-president. Some forty classmates and wives provided a warm enthusiastic audience for your secretary's "Stevens Story" introduction and Bob's talk. For the record, he listed his predecessors as N. Y.'s 27 honored guests. In '56 Dud Bonsal, '59 Cliff Randall, '61 Lee Greenbaum, '62 Josh Davis, '63 Charlie Gibsen, '64 Sykes Hardy, '65 Charlie Bartlett, and '66 Gus Cummings. A pretty distinguished group of classmates, don't you agree? Bob talked on "People, Paradox and Balance." Wish you had been there.
Stu Schackne is another who has somehow got Europe and Hanover mixed on his June itinerary. He is off to Spain to see his son who is in the real estate development business on Costa del Sol!
Coggie Broer, showing no evidence of powder burns from his pistol packing, diamond demanding, holdup hooligans (see last month's '27 column) got the "farthest away" (not out) guest award.
Paul Hannah and Larry Scammon kept the record clear - no New York '27 event without Boston representation and vice versa. Fred Page and his wife down from north of Hanover, when introduced as from Vermont by Jack Greener, M.C., complained bitterly about those who confuse the two sides of the Connecticut River, "Don't know east from west."
Jim Picken, you may remember, retired last year for all of six weeks and then was tapped as Assistant Headmaster for Newark Academy where he is busy as ever and thriving. Bill Williams in from New Haven area. Don O'Hara, another recent retiree, spent most of the bad weather months casing Florida for permanent digs, but made no rash decisions or down payments he says. Tom Gillespie missed the affair, had a fall and wound up with head wound, and a few stitches. Hope it is all OK by now.
By the time you read this, word of MikeChoukas' retirement from the faculty will be out. Have tried to find Mike's plans but so far no full word. Bob Stevens has written Mike a delightful letter which we will try to get Mike to include in the next Speak. I am sure the college is losing one who has made a great contribution in his field and in the minds of countless students.
Dick Fox has settled down in Sarasota, Fla., where he says he is playing golf and fishing year around. Elmer Worth is now assistant professor of psychology at Hartford Junior College - but am not sure if it's Maryland or Connecticut. Jock Davis continues to become increasingly prominent in his field - agriculture. LBJ just nominated him for a six-year term on the Federal Farm Credit Board. Do you suppose a classmate could touch him up for a fat loan to buy a retirement farm?
Curt Wright says, "I have perfected my escape from the cloisters of academe. Am now back in the practice of law." Firm of "Foulke, Knight, Stefan and Timoney" of Ambler, Pa., although Curt's home still is Philly.
Charley Fleischer misses reunion to see his son ordained a Priest, leaving soon after for his first assignment in Guatemala. GilGilbert questions his ability to get back because of a series of operations this past year. Hope you continue your recouping, Gil.
One way to get to Europe is to have your company buy a company in Italy and put you on the board. Gus Cummings thus got May in Europe. Tough duty, Gus.
Plans are to prepare a 40th Year Report for the class which will combine a current Aegis, Pine Tree story, new class officers and other available data, if, I repeat, if, you all will get your wives, secretaries, sons, grandchildren or whoever, to respond to the questionnaire re your braggings, modesties, facts or fibs. No editing or responsibility from this end; you will be on your own, but let's hear from you - yours for the next 40.
