In retrospect the Fall Reunion still seems to have been a very successful one with a total of 83 members and wives present for part or all of the proceedings. Among the high spots which made the occasion memorable were the induction of Dr. JohnWolf as our newest class member at the Saturday morning meeting, the resounding victory over Princeton that afternoon, and the presence of President and Mrs. Kemeny at cocktails that evening. Another pleasant touch was supplied by a postcard from France addressed to President Howie Mullin and signed by John P. Roberts, a Yale man, and three friends saying, "Les amis du vin wish to salute the newest member of the Class of 1927. A votre santé, M. le Docteur Wolf!"

Back in the summer Sam and AlliceWormser and Sid Voice represented the class at Rudy Preuss's funeral in Rockville Center, N. Y., and Sam reported that at that time Rudy's widow, Frances, was still in a wheel chair as a result of having broken her hip in March. But Sam thought she would be up by mid-September, and we hope that all goes well now for Fran and her family.

Howie Mullin had a very nice note from Rudy's daughter Mary Lou saying that she was taking her father's place "in watching the scores for Dartmouth football" and it is good to know that she evidently shares Rudy's loyalty and enthusiasm for Dartmouth.

Howie also had a gracious note from Ethel Rice, Cliff's widow, in which she said that she was having a complete dispersal of their Ayrshire herd on October 29 and that although the management was in very capable hands, there was much to keep her busy. And she added, "I plan to stay on at this farm—can't imagine wanting to live anywhere else. But the dairy farm we shall no doubt lease, and this is going to simplify things no end for me."

A card from Al Lawrence said, "Jean and I had a great time at the Dartmouth Alumni College in August.... It is a great experience and well worth while. Ran into Al House several times doing summer research in Hanover. Played that horrendous golf course. Stayed in Fayerweather— seemed not much older than in did back in 1925."

The O'Connells, Paul Revere and Helen, had a September golfing vacation at Grandfather Mountain "deep in the Appalachians in the western part of North Carolina, . . . said to be the oldest geologically in the nation but now a delightful golf and ski resort." At the end of October Paul Revere and Helen were back in Pinehurst where he played in the Nineteenth Annual North and South Senior Championship. In between those jaunts they were in Hanover for Fall Reunion. How some folks do get around!

As of late October Rog Bury had received returns from these 22 classmates on the birthday card poll, which, of course, about half of us have not had a chance to get in on yet: Fritz Kortlucke, Brad Fuller, Blondy Lashar, Charlie Fleischer, Tom Wheeler. Len Dunn, Curt Wright, Mert Cotton, Ted Girault, Chuck Brewster, Bill Elliott, Herb Howe, Ding Heap, George Marks, Alan Welty, Merritt Joslyn, Bob Fall, Bob Bliss, Ross Lyon, Dud Bonsa, Roger Braman, and Clark Edmonds. No clear trend as to the most popular hobbies or retirement avocations is yet discernible, but a tally is being kept, and results will be announced when all returns are in, some time next spring.

For those of you who may have been aware of the concern expressed by some voices regarding the Dartmouth Night bonfire on the Green, it might be reassuring to know that The Environment Studies Division of the D.O.C. said, according to

"The Dartmouth," that bonfires can cause only an "insignificant amount of environmental pollution in Hanover" and that bonfires provide "the feeling which so many people put in various words but which all fail to adequately express and which we will only describe as another part of the Dartmouth-North Country experience in the fall." Can any of us ever forget our first Dartmouth bonfire on Dartmouth Night of our freshman year when the sparks flew upward to meet the stars and we knew were part of something far greater than a mere collection of buildings and books, something we might never fully understand but which would be with us from that moment on?

And now a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Peaceful New Year to one and all.
