I'm always grateful for words of encouragement so the first item I will include in these notes is one from Tuscumbia, Ala. With the item was a pleasant note from Lucy Ware, spouse to Joe Ware, who paid me the ultimate compliment of telling me that they both enjoy the column. Rare praise. It doesn't take much to turn on us latent Red Smiths, see.

Anyway, Lucy sent me an item that should have been in last month's column (I misplaced it). Joe was just elected to the Board of Directors of the First Colbert Bank, a bank which serves Colbert County, Ala. But our interest in the item doesn't end there. Joe's list of other accomplishments is very impressive. He's president of Ware Cotton Storage & Manufacturing Company and vice president of Consumers Bagging & Tie Company. He also has a list of civic affiliations which would exhaust me in the telling, so just let it suffice to say that there are a newspaper column full. Joe and Lucy have three daughters and a son (a junior, of course) and, I would say, a very full life.

Several items from the good oF Nutmeg State this month. First, our great leader John J. Boyle Jr. has finally got himself a third boy. That's right. Jack and Dodie's third child (all boys, naturally) Was born on April 9, 1967. His name? James Fenton Boyle. Girl Boyles? Whoever heard of such a thing. Yet, Dodie, brave soul, looks forward to number four with unflagging hope. Congratulations, Boyles!

From Hartford comes news that our freshman Rep. in the Conn. Statehouse, Dave Neiditz, is already introducing bills right and left. His latest would make it more difficult for me to plead insanity in any criminal case I might subsequently be involved in. Anyway that's how I read it with my limited experience with legal terminology. Keep it up, Dave, and you may get us all in jail sooner or later.

Also in Connecticut, but with nationwide implications, Dr. Ely Wagshul of Meriden has been elected diplomate of the American Board of Urology. If he were only near enough I would go to Ely for discussions on my latest symptoms. As it is the disease might get me before I "got to him.

Last month (or was it the month before) I told you all how old Jack Foster was getting to be a mover of men at Ryerson Steel. This month I've got the full report from the company's P.R. Dept. (they're not as efficient as E. K. Calhoun). Jack has been named national marketing manager for carbon steel, bars, plates, shapes, sheets and coils (and probably all other miscellaneous categories) for Ryerson. If you all don't know Ryerson is the nation's leading distributor of steel, aluminum, space age metals, etc., I'm not going to tell you. I just hope you guys in Chicago who read this have already welcomed Jack and Sally with the benevolent open arms I'm always crediting you with.

And whatever became of Jay Sellout? Well, he's - a partner in the Boston real esstate firm of Wm. C. Codman and one of the prime movers in the building of Downtown Boston's largest office structure, the State Street Bank Building. Jay, with his wife and one child, live on Beacon Hill and he still sings a lot - with the Apollo Club of Boston, the oldest singing group in America.

Still some of us have enough life to get married. Dr. Jules Baum does, anyway. He's engaged to Miss Ann Tarnower of Teaneck, N. J. Jules is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at N. Y. U. Medical Center.

Way down in Houston, Tex. BrockLewis has been elected vice president and trust officer of the newly organized trust department of Capital National Bank. Brock goes to Houston from Poughkeepsie, N. Y., where he was vice president and trust officer of County National Bank. Before that he was assistant trust officer of Fidelity Union Trust Company, Newark, N. J. He is also a former director of Pacific National Bank in Nantucket, Mass. In 1963, Brock received the Outstanding Man of the Year Award for Somerset Hill's area in New Jersey.

Close by there, in New Jersey, lives DickMcDonough, newly appointed controller of the European division of the Singer Company. For the past couple of years Dick has been in Scotland as controller and director of finance at Singer's plant in Clydebank. Hope you're glad to be back in the States, Dick!

Out in Michigan, Ford Motor Company has recently formed a new Industrial and Chemical Products Division and they've appointed our own Phil Benton general manager of the new division. Phil's been with Ford since 1953 when he left Tuck School and has had, obviously, good fortune with them. He seems to make it in these columns about as often as anyone!

Two academic appointments this month. Out in Muhlenberg, Pa., Ed Baldridge has been named associate dean of the liberal arts college. Ed, Dr. Baldridge, to you unwashed, was recently appointed associate professor of history and so he'll divide his time equally between teaching and administrative duties.

Up in Cambridge, Harvard University has a new professor who is also a '52 Classmate. It's Walt Salmon, who is professor of retail merchandising. Walt has been doing research and teaching at Harvard since 1956 and, before his appointment, was associate professor of Harvard Business School. Congratulations, Walt, and take it easy on those kids. It wasn't so long ago you were in their position (at least it doesn't seem long).

Also from the Boston area, Bill Breed makes the news again. He's now chairman of the Special Gifts Division of the Salem (Mass.) Hospital. He has a lot of money to raise but with an honest face like his he shouldn't have much trouble.

A note, too, from Canada. You'll recall I mentioned some time ago that Jim Weidman is new president of Hamilton Watch of Canada. Well, his wife, Ann, now tells us where we can sponge off him when we're in the Toronto area. They live at 2911 Bayview Ave., Apt. 106F (apartment number is important, I'm told), Willowdale, Ontario.

With this issue I once again wrap up a correspondent year - with one more to go. Jolly times until next fall when I hope I'll be back with you, God and the law willing. So long for a while.
