A sincere thank-you to all of you who wrote notes of appreciation and sent checks for the 40th Year Book deficit. I hope I can find time to write each of you. It certainly gives a fellow a warm feeling to know his efforts stir up all that enthusiasm.

For the benefit of our non-'28 readers, "The Book" was sent to every '28er with a slip mentioning that it was free but that we did have a deficit to worry about. Checks from $5 to $25 have been coming in all summer. (Widows also received the book - without the dunning slip.)

After you read the following letter from Craig Haines you'll have an inkling why the class reelected him Treasurer:

"Your excellent book in celebration of our 40th year since graduation was truly a labor of love; but over and above this, and even after John Phillips' very generous contribution of the binding costs, the out-of-pocket expenses came to $2,227. To date 140 members of the Class have contributed a total of $1,321.50 towards this expenditure. After the excellent response which Bill Morton received in the Alumni Fund this year and the remarkable response to your request for photographs, it would appear that sufficient additional members would be appreciative enough to contribute toward the book's cost so that we may close the record in the black. I certainly hope so."

Bill Harris didn't get back from his Mediterranean cruise in time for reunion - now he is off on a filming expedition to Easter Island and the Inca country. In January he will be in charge of his 15th World Cruise.

Herm and Marguerite Schnepel and daughters exchanged their Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, summer home for one in Geneva, Switzerland, and are enthusiastic about the whole deal, including their two-week trip through Italy. Marguerite is the new Alumnae Fund Director for Vassar, which means she will be in Poughkeepsie part of each week. She went into fund raising for her alma mater while Herm was our Class Agent in 1955-56.

George Davis has been elected a director of Continental Insurance Co. He is chairman of Glens Falls Insurance Co., of which about 91% was acquired by Continental in June.

Bob Maclellan, president of Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co., Chattanooga, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Maryville College's commencement last June.

Ingrid Rasp, formerly of Fuessen, Germany, and Chuck Bruder were married May 17 in the chapel of the Central Presbyterian Church in New York, with Jim Crawford '58 officiating. At the last minute Chuck had to cancel plans to attend our 40th because of the last-minute crush on the Singer-Gen-eral Precision Instrument merger which was consummated on July 11.

On August 2 Dick and Jean Brooks started on a two months' trip to the Canadian Rockies and our own Northwest, including a boat trip from Vancouver to Alaska. Dick retired June 30 as manager of a Sears Roebuck paint plant in New Jersey and moved to Greensboro, N. C.

Thought you'd like Art Kneerim's comment about "The 40th Year Book" - "It is small treasure for the sentimental, a stimulus to the curious and a delight to the philosophical. What a lot of good guys!"

In June Dusty Griffin and Natalie drove their younger son's new Mustang from St. Louis to Guatemala ("no one should drive his own car in Mexico City!") and were there for their son's marriage to a lovely Guatemalan girl, Miss Madeline Brol Estrada, and some of the attendant festivities. They had a good chat with Dana and VernaCondon at the church and reception. The groom, Ralph '65, has been an official at the American Embassy for two years.

Warren Burding's daughter, Margaret, and Michael Downs plan to be married November 9. Jack Goodnow's daughter, Persis, and Charles F. Hamilton were married August 17; Charles is on the staff of the Fairfield Country Day School, Fairfield, Conn.... Bill Lord's daughter, Marion, and Stephen W. Winship of Concord, N. H., were married at her home in Gilford, N. H., in July.

Sam Magavern is taking things easier after a coronary attack early in June. ... JackKenerson called Art Gow up the end of June and learned Art had had a bad automobile accident on one of the New York thruways, and that his wife was seriously ill.

We haven't tabulated the hobbies listed in the 40th Year Book, but you'd be surprised how many '28ers still play young men's games like handball (Morton), tennis (Rickenbaugh, Church, Zellers), mountain climbing (Red Sanborn). Now along comes CalBillings, apparently rested up after his arduous job as Reunion Chairman, who runs a mile every other day - in 8 minutes. He claims it's a good way to hold your weight down - he weighs 151.

During the summer we lost four well known members of our Class: Lanky Lang-dell, Jack Carson, John Mason, and JimFrampton. In Memoriam notices will be found in this or succeeding issues. The sympathy of the Class is extended to their families.

See you at the '28 annual fall reunion at the Norwich Inn - Oct. 11-12, which is the Princeton game weekend.
