THE UNIQUENESS OF SEASONS AND DARTMOUTH

Summer has faded, fall is nigh and "around the girdled earth" we look toward new horizons and bold challenges which lead, as do the seasons, to significant changes in the field of human endeavor and in the hearts of all men, everywhere.

Dartmouth is unique in the success of its perennial Alumni Fund Drive and 1968 was no exception, with '42 maintaining a position of excellence as usual, this time for the first time under the able leadership of Head Agent W. John Nauss Jr. of Scarsdale, N. Y. In summing up John said, "I hope that over the winter before the start of the next Fund Drive we can come up with some concrete suggestions to reach the higher level of contributors that we formerly had." Can we do less than accede to John's request? The challenge is clear for all of us.

The program will put millions of dollars of purchasing power on the line annually in the struggle for equal opportunity in all aspects of employment. The project was initiated by the Greater Cleveland Interracial Council. It operates in ten states, through thirteen local offices, and serves 115 lay and religious bodies including Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, and Unitarian-Universalist. The word several months ago was that Arthur Cox of Washington, D. C., and the Brookings Institution since 1963 has been working practically fulltime on how we might bring the Vietnam war to a successful and honorable solution. Art spent considerable time in the U.S. Foreign Service and feels that the United States must "negotiate a settlement that makes some sense." He feels strongly that "we need more people in Congress who know something about it." Art himself announced his intention to file as a Democratic candidate for Congress from the 2nd New Hampshire District, but after a certain amount of press coverage, it was discovered that Art could not legally do this because of his having voted in Washington, D. C. Although a native of Hanover (his father was the late Prof. Sidney Cox), Art has not lived in New Hampshire since graduation and his initial announcement raised the cry of "carpetbagger."

A tip of the hat to Jack Hurd, secretary of the class of '21 and one of our favorite Big Green English professors when we were "green," for sending us a clip re Dr. Richard B. Maxwell Jr., member of the Westfield (N. J.) YMCA board of directors, who is chairman of the youth committee which provided an all-day youth seminar to explore services to junior and senior highschool-age youth several months ago at Union College. The purpose was to decide upon ways to serve the teenage population group by providing views and ideas which can have an important impact on YMCA programs for years to come.
