Our Jim O'Shea (MD) is the author of the Massachusetts law which permits physicians under some circumstances to treat youngsters with a drug problem without parental consent. Jim also feels that "Education alone is not the answer to the drug problem. We've educated our young that smoking and drinking are bad. We've got to change our society, and the family is the key to that." Jim also feels that there is complacency and that not too much is being done about the problem—he feels it is getting worse. Jim, a former athlete who always gave his best, feels that "We can recognize no halfway measure in dealing with heroin addiction . . . The heroin addict must seek self-help, a methadone maintenance program, or he should stay in jail because if he stays on the street he will contaminate more of our children."
It was under Jim's guidance that the Greater Lawrence Community Drug Council was formed, an association representing the muscle, brain, and manpower of area large industries, school, police, city officials, physicians, and community leaders. A chief of pediatrics at Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen, he is probably more involved in the drug problem than any other person in the six-state area.
Don Meads has left TBEC to become executive vice president in charge of financial and general operations for IN A Corporation, a broadbased, diversified financial and service oriented enterprise which operates in over 110 countries. Don's philosophy: "I still feel strongly that private enterprise has a great deal to contribute in solving some of the pressing problems of the world. But we won't be successful unless we remain constantly aware of the social, political, and economic environments in which we live. To me, its not just a question of social conscience. It's sound business."
Rollie Tremble has been elected to the board of directors of Bartell Media Corporation, publisher and distributor of magazines, paperback and hardbound books, and trade periodicals, and owner and operator of radio stations and CATV companies. Once again we have some news to report which has to do with '42's Robert Hill, celebrated Littleton (N.H.) resident. Bob was the featured speaker at a recent meeting of the New Hampshire Federation of Republican Women's Clubs. The meeting was held at Crawford Notch. It is almost superfluous to mention that Bob is the U. S. Ambassador to Spain and a most distinguished and knowledgeable speaker. He is a former Ambassador to Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Assistant Secretary of State. Bob is also a former member of the New Hampshire legislature and is on the boards of the United Fruit Line and the Grace Steamship Line.
