The Vikings discovered America a long time ago, but America really only discovered the Vikings when they smeared the Browns for the NFL championship; Kansas City made the Oakland Raiders see red in their hotly-contested game, won by the Chiefs by a less than comfortable margin in a second half marked by interceptions and fumbles; and so the New Year began just a few short weeks after Dartmouth's 200th Birthday Celebration on December 13, a great and wonderful event topped by gifts and pledges that brought the Third Century Fund to a total of almost $42,650,000. A great December and January for all those Viking, Chief, and Indian fans, With the Super Bowl and Dartmouth's $51,000,000 looming large in 1970's immediate future.
I find myself, as '42's secretary, hoping that The Great Class of '42 will perform creditably in advancing Dartmouth College toward its $5l million goal in this final phase of the Third Century Fund drive in 1970.
A Hooker for You!: Neil M. Barber, a section manager at Hooker Chemical Corporation (subsidiary of Occidental Pete), has received a promotion and broadened responsibilities. He has been named to manage the purchases of chemicals, raw materials, and containers. Formerly Neil managed purchases for construction and engineering equipment. Barber joined Hooker in 1942 shortly after graduation and held a number of sales posts, including that of manager of sales in the Phillie area and also as manager of market development prior to joining the purchasing department in 1965. Beard Popular in Pittsburgh: Bearded James Craig Kuhn, replete with sideburns, mustache and just slightly receding hairline, was being talked up by City Hall officials as the best prospect to head the Pittsburgh City Council's important finance committee in 1970. Jim, known for his beard, vests, and incisive questioning of city expenditures, won re-election to another four-year term several Tuesdays ago on 112,468 votes. An attorney, he is now chairman of the council's public safety committee, a post he has held for eight of his ten years on the council.
Maine Leads the Nation Again!: Maine leads the nation in conjecture and public opinion polls relating to Attorney General James S. Erwin's chances for governor in that great state. We forgot to tell you last month that the most recent poll gave the attorney general a 51 to 49 per cent edge over the governor. Meanwhile back at the ranch Governor Kenneth M. Curtis has quietly ordered a poll of his own, reportedly to be taken by Oliver Quayle and Company of New York. Ollie, who has done a lot of political polling for the Kennedy family and LBJ, worked on a public opinion survey for Curtis in 1966 which proved useful in his campaign to unseat former governor, John H. Reed.
New Year's Resolution Time: As we look forward to another annual Alumni Fund Drive which will conclude in June 1970, let all of us '42's resolve to win back the preeminence in participation and dollar giving which has characterized The Great Class of '42 during the decades of the fifties and the sixties. To do it we shall need to improve upon our 1969 record of 351 contributors, 67.4% participation for $33,121 and 70.2% of objective. Hopefully when 1970 wanes we'll be able to kick up our heels again and chant the now-familiar "We're Number One!"
