For the first time since 1954, Dartmouth's cross-country team raced to a winning record and the Indians' 6-1 mark ranks as the best since 1943 when they claimed the Heptagonal championship. The victories came over Colgate, Boston State, Columbia, Yale, Brown, and Northeastern. Only Harvard reigned over the Green in dual competition.
Sophomore Eric Potter from Clinton, N. Y., triggered the resurgence of cross country under first-year coach Ken Weinbel. Potter won every race he started except against Harvard and then took 12th place in the Heptagonal Meet. He finished 43rd in a field of more than 200 at the IC4A meet in New York City and 155th out of more than 300 in the NCAA championship meet.
"We hoped for progress and we got it," said Weinbel, who will have a good nucleus returning in Potter and captain-elect Parke Rublee.
