Those of you who did not attend the Princeton game in Hanover on October 12 missed out on a mini-reunion. The results of the football game left a great deal to be desired but other than that the get-together was great. George Drowne did his usual superb job in making arrangements for our class dinner at the Norwich Inn following the game. Thanks, George! Those seen either at the game or at the dinner were: Bill Bates, Al and Edna Beekman and son Peter '69 (leader of the Band), Wes and Jan Beattie, Art and Mary Connelly, Don and Mugs D'Arcy, Jeff and Bea Davis, George Drowne, George and Polly Farrand, Bill and Janet Hitchcock, Cliff and Sally Johnson, Whit and Ginny Kimball and their guests, Dr. and Mrs. Bob Bital, Ed and Peg Knapp, Bud and Kathy King, Jack and Dottie Manchester, John and Jeanne Meek, Howie and Dottie Nichols, Jud and Ginny Pierson and their son Jay '62 and his wife Sue, Dave and Jeanne Russell, Ev and Alice Shineman, Hank and Helen Smith and their daughter Chana with her date, Gobin and Julia Stair, and Bill and Marion Starr. (My apologies if I have overlooked anyone.) It was a good party so plan to join us next year.

I know you all will be pleased to learn that Carl Shineman is able to work a few hours each day following his operation last January as reported in the June notes. Keep it up, Carl!!

My assistant reports that Jack Donovan, Sam Gass, Sid Stoneman and Al Terry all attended the Holy Cross game in Worcester.

Last month's column noted that TedHolmes had moved to Prince Edward Island. Ted wrote: "I am on leave from the University of Maine, Orono, Me., for the academic year 1968-69. At Prince of Wales College here on Prince Edward Island ,I am visiting professor of American literature. I plan to move back to our summer home at Bass Harbor, Me., in late May, 1969 and to return to the University of Maine in September 1969. I made the change because I was invited, because it would raise my salary, and because I had stayed in one place for 12 years - a record for me, but one that made me nervous and itchy.

"As far as I know, I have not seen a member of the class since April 1967 when I visited Dar Bates, Bill Schlesinger, and Herb Moatz in Cleveland, none of whom I had seen in far too many years."

On September 16, President Johnson appointed Parker Hart Assistant Secretary of State of Near Eastern and South African Affairs to replace Lucius D. Battle who resigned. Pete is a career diplomat serving since 1938, and returns to Washington after being Ambassador to Turkey. He speaks Arabic, French, Portuguese, and German. Congratulations!!

There are five lucky '33ers with sons in this year's freshman class. They are: BobEstes, Peter M.; John Monagan, Charles A.; John Rockwell, John S.; Bill Schlesinger, William H.; Lup White, Richard L. We wish these new '72 Men of Dartmouth well.

Alva Allen and Dr. Eleanor R. Cate are married. He is district group manager for New England Mutual Life Insurance Company in "Cleveland and Eleanor is teaching at Cleveland State University. Al writes: "I re-married August 8 and we are quite busy in our new home in Lyndhurst (5399 Golfway Lane). Our travels to date include a visit to Hot Springs, Va., in August, and to Pennsylvania Dutch country in September. If all goes well, we hope to take our first trip to Hawaii this December after classes close at Cleveland State University.

"It has been a long time since I climbed Moosilauke - early December of 1931 or 1932 if memory serves correctly. Carriage Road and ski run going up to the winter cabin, where potatoes put to the back of the stove had a protective coating of ice on the water by the time the rest of our three-man late dinner was ready! Things are quite different now, I've heard."

Yes, there have been some changes on Moosilauke. I climbed it a few weeks ago with a group of boys from Holderness School led by Master Bill Biddle '52. We went up the Beaver Brook Trail and came down Glencliff. The mountain is getting much steeper and higher!! The old hotel at the top is no longer there having been destroyed by fire. The old winter cabin has been replaced by a more modern version. It still is a beautiful mountain and that day there were groups from Brandeis University, Harvard Medical School, Plymouth High School, Noble and Greenough plus many others enjoying the fall foliage and pure mountain air.

Horace Shaw of the Burlington Savings Bank in Burlington, Vt., was good enough to send me an article which appeared in the "United States Investor."

Lym Wakefield isjoining the brokerage firm of Piper, Jaffray and Hopwood in Minneapolis. He has been vice president in charge of the metropolitan business development division of the First National Bank of Minneapolis. He is president of the Downtown Auto Park Company, a civic venture begun in the early 1950's which utilized private capital to develop the first off-street parking facilities. He is a director of the Northstar Steel Company, St. Paul which began operations in 1967. Earlier he was a prime mover in the raising of $3,500,000 to build this plant which is the first continuous casting steel mill in the Twin Cities. Good luck on your new venture.

The following enjoyed tail-gating and the Yale game: Bill and Sue Bates, Wes and Jan Beattie, Bea and Jeff Davis, Ed and Peg Knapp, John and Rosemary Monagan, and George and Rae Theriault. It was an interesting game to watch even if we did come out on the short end of the score. And the weather was 300% better than last year.

The Third Century Fund is getting into high gear and as of early November, 28 of our classmates are working with more being added every day. Each of us should be planning to do his fair share.

My thanks to those of you who wrote or sent in material for this column. I hope others will do the same. My very best wishes to you and yours for the holiday season!!
