Thanks to Wes Beattie for the following news from Bob Goodell who is the Cultural Attache Officer at the American Embassy in London: "John Michael Fiske Goodell, born July 24, 1972. Fairly staggering stuff isn't it? He's doing very well indeed. Despite an English mother and his birth in London, he isn't English. Children of fathers who are (a) diplomats or (b) enemy aliens, can't be English!" Congratulations Bob and Anne!
An inquiry regarding a change of address prompted Bill Alden to write from the University of Virginia: "No, I have not retured altogether. It is coincidence that some Hanover office got my Goshen address this time since I have often spent the summer there. We own a house there now, an inherited one. I did, in a sense, retire when I stepped down from the chairmanship of the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Virginia. Last year I was on sabbatical and spent as much of it as I could in Paris working on the Proust papers at the Bibliotheque Nationale. But my sabbatical was interrupted by my election to the presidency of the American Association of Teachers of French. That forced me to come back to the states in February, but I did manage to steal back to Paris in the summer when no one was looking."
John and Jean Meck's daughter Julie and Charles B. Hamlin were married in Rollins Chapel on October 28. They will live in Marblehead, Mass., where he is marketing manager for Hood Sailmakers.
Page Worthington thoughtfully sent a news clipping from a Kansas City paper. The Eddie Jacobson Memorial Foundation recently received a gift of an Israel bond from Helpers Anonymous. A trust will be established in memory of Philip L. Byers, long-time area physician, who died last year. The income is to be given to a deserving medical student.
Early in October, Stu Durkee wrote from South Laguna, Calif.: "Rounding out ten years of retirement (?) I find myself keeping as busy as ever. For the past nine years I have been associated with the Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach where I am on the Board of Directors, Treasurer and Staging Consultant for the Pageant. This activity contributes substantially to the community's educational and cultural benefits, over $100,000 a year; not bad for a town of 14,000 people. I also find time to travel and am off for Athens, Vienna and London next week. Hope to see you at our Fortieth next year."
Enjoy the holidays and remember when making your New Year's resolutions—our 40th Reunion June 11-14. Hope to see you all there in 1973!!
