FORTIETH REUNION!JUNE 11-14, 1973'33 UP!!
Hal Mackey writes from Bronxville and puts Plymouth on the map: "For the first time I noticed your home address and that only because of your mention that Hobie and Dawn Van Deusen came into Plymouth from Wentworth. Fifty years Too this summer I had my first glimpse of wentworth and Plymouth. It was my first summer at Camp Moosilauke on Upper Baker Pond (five miles from Wentworth). I was among the four Catholics at Camp and every Sunday a car drove us to Plymouth to attend Mass (it being the nearest Catholic Church to camp in those days) Needless to say it was a welcome excursion. Enough of that. For news of our classmates - namely Jack Smart, my roommate. Jack has a magnificent home in Roxbury, Conn., surrounded by 78 acres. Swimming pool, guest house, the works! The early part of February he and his charming wife Hendricka are taking off for two months for Australia. How I envy them! Well I have completed one of my resolutions, writing you. I'm through until next January." (Thanks Hal and I hope others will follow suit.)
Word has been received from Dick Jackson that Alva Allen lost his wife Eleanor on December 7 1972. "'She was unique in her academic achievements, for she not only obtained a Bachelor's Degree from Barnard College: she was the only American woman to receive a Master's Degree with First Class Honors from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. with distinction from Columbia University in Religion, where her sponsors for the degree were Gilbert Highet and the late Reinhold Niebuhr, names well known in the world of learning. Her degree was a so-called "cross-disciplinary" degree, which involved the disciplines of the Classics, as well as Religion; and she was the only holder of such a degree. She continued in her academic career and hundreds of outstanding scholars recognized the name Dr. Eleanor Russell Cate." The Class offers its sympathy to Al.
From Culver, Ind., Martin Uebel writes: "Although my main activity is teaching German at Culver Military Academy, which is now coed, I still have an occasional fling at music - this time it was as Bandmaster of the Summer Naval School Band. In addition to playing for parades, we presented a concert every Sunday'afternoon in the auditorium, along with two moonlight serenades, playing from the squarerigger as we cruised the lake. Our older son David is now married and manages a restaurant in southern Indiana. Mark is a freshman at Indiana University, and through him I renewed a music acquaintance from Germany almost 40 years ago. We have a Dartmouth Freshman coed on the lake; she is very enthusiastic."
On the other hand Hunter Hicks writes from Hilton Head Island, S.C.: "Don't agree with college programs but hope to get to the 40th just to see some of my old friends."
Rus Ackerman in Litchfield, Conn., says: "Helen and I are beginning to think of retirement to Daytona, Fla. Still may be a year or so. Also anticipating Reunion."
George Farrand, Page Worthington, and Mannie Sprague were in Hanover for the Alumni Council meeting in January. At that time the Council approved $3.75 million for the Rupert C. Thompson Arena - it will serve as an ice arena, basketball court, or auditorium.
Dick Jackson also wrote: "Helen and I continue the round of activities which we have found most congenial. She is neck deep in altar guild work, while I am a lay reader in the Northern Diocese of Ohio. She is now much more of a fireball in skating matters than the old man. I still manage to cut a figure or two, but she is running a tremendous program (the so-called "badge Program') to help the youngsters learn the rudiments in skating at the Cleveland Skating Clud." of two daughters are happily married. Debbie and her husband Charles Shelton are in Africa doing work for the Tanzanian government. Faith and her husband Richard Wadhams are enjoying Burlington, Vt. where he is an attorney and she works for W. E. Hutton, stockbrokers.
Up through early January Bill Dewey had heard from 153 of you re: our 40th Reunion - 106 coming and 47 unable to come. When the wives are added this makes a good start! There are however about 350 of you who have not answered - please help Bill and his committee with their plans for your enjoyment on June 41 to 14 by writing him today at Quechee, Vt. SidStoneman is organizing a seminar for one of the mornings. Come back to Hanover for a wonderful time with old friends!!
Our 40th Reunion Giving Goal is $150,000. Wes Beattie and his committee have received one pledge of $25,000 and two of $10,000 plus many of lesser amounts, so we are underway. For this one year please place Dartmouth at the top of your list to receive your financial support. You will be contacted soon so be prepared.
The annual Boston Alumni Meeting is scheduled for March 20 at the Marriott Inn, Newton. SidStoneman is planning a class get together prior to the dinner, so those in the area should reserve the date and await further word from Sid and his committee.
