FEBRUARY 1968 JUDSON T. PIERSON, GEORGE N. FARRAND, WOOD R. FOSTER

I have received some wonderful notes in the last few weeks and I want to share them with you. First from Win Hobbs who is assistant vice-president in charge of technical operations in the New York office of The Corporation Trust Company. "For Dartmouth I have spent nearly twenty years as part of the candidate interviewing staff and for the past six years have been chairman for Westchester County. For recreation - golf, tennis, yard, but mostly travel. When the kids were young, we enjoyed camping trips - five to the Far West and all the states in between. Lately Emily and I have been traveling abroad - England, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, etc., plus trips to many of the Caribbean countries. Looking forward to reunion!" Win and Emily live in Scarsdale, N. Y., where Win has been tremendously active in many community organizations and in the Hitchcock Presbyterian Church. He is a director and helped organize the Westchester County United Fund. Son, David, is Dartmouth 63 with master of M.E. degree from Rensselaer. Daughter, Dorothy, is Barnard 65 and working on a Ph.D. at Columbia. Emily and Win also have a second son, Fred.

Hunter Hicks writes "Mary and I have retired to Hilton Head (after over thirty years with Merchants Steel & Supply of Chicago) and expect to spend eight or nine months a year here, returning to Chicago in the summer with some traveling thrown in. We are building a house here which is taking up a lot of time and money, but we are crazy about the area and feel sure that this is the place for us. Investigated Florida, California, and Arizona but this place always came out best when we compared it to the others. I play golf about twenty times a month and still can keep it in the 70's. We are in good health and can enjoy most of the activities of 30 years ago which is one of the reasons for early retirement. We are proud of our boys who have chosen wonderful girls as their wives and while we are not grandparents, we are hopeful that when they are finally settled a couple of Dartmouth or Wellesley offspring will result. Hope to be in Hanover in June - see ya." The sons Hunter mentions are John '63, who married Wendy Thomas, a Sweet Briar graduate and Stephen, U. of Arizona '66, who married Barbara Pettersen, a U. of Wisconsin graduate.

And while on the subject of retirement, a change of address came through for BillGaynor, now living at 1204 East Concord St Orlando, Fla. Does this indicate retirement for you, Bill? Dave Coolidge and his wife, Elaine, have two daughters and a son. Daughter Carol, Miami U. (Ohio) '61 is now Mrs. David Albertson and the mother of the two Coolidge grandsons. Christine attended U. Michigan but resigned in favor of marriage to Robert Walsh last June. David III graduated from Williams in "65 and Harvard Business in '67. Dave writes "About two and a half years ago I joined a former associate at Johnson and Quin, Inc., a 91-year-old Chicago printing firm. Since then the company has been completely changed from the usual printer-lithographer to an 'engineered printing and specialty paper products' company. We are some four times larger now and are looking forward to continuing this growth pattern. It's quite a challenge but very interesting as well as gratifying. Although I haven't been back to Hanover since leaving school, some day I'll make it and hope to renew old acquaintances." Make it this June, Dave.

The American Institute of Consulting Engineers has elected Walter Douglas a vice president for 1968, according to word received from that 400- member organization. Walt, senior partner of Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quade & Douglas, New York City, has been responsible for a wide variety of firm projects in national and regional transportation planning, ports and waterfront work, and airfields and air bases. His boss as president of the AICE is Dick Hazen '32.

Art Connelly and his wife, Mary, are frequent visitors on Hanover football weekends. "My small, one-man candy business, although rewarding, is very confining. Mary and I remain quite provincial. We are all healthy and enjoying life. Skiing and golf are my hobbies plus a health program of running and exercise. Our sources of pride and joy - son Dan '64 is now at Cornell working on a Ph.D. in Photogrammetric and Geodetic Engineering (wow!) and daughter Eileen is enjoying her first year at Green Mountain Junior College." Art is active in Lynn as a director of the Y.M.C.A., Visiting Nurse Association and the Chamber of Commerce.

Remember Jack Lamb? Haven't heard from him for years. He writes "Haven't been in Hanover since 1934 - guess I'd not know the place today. Been in Dallas since 1947 (he is an account underwriter and concerned with employee training with Liberty Mutual Insurance Co.). Have one son getting his Ph.D. in Math next June and my other son is an attorney now in training to be a trust officer in a local bank. (He doesn't say which is John and which is James.) Both married teachers. My wife, Edna, and I are what's called locally 'empty-nestus' — no kids at home!"

Congratulations to George Rideout who was recently elected president of the board of trustees of Gordon College and Gordon Divinity School in Beverly, Mass.

Bill Winn indicated a year or so ago that retirement was tempting him and a change of address that just came in indicates he may have done just that. His new address is Tucson, Ariz. And a change of address from Pete Mankowski, moving from Minneapolis to Jenner, Calif., also indicates some major change. Please drop me a line Bill and Pete and tell me what gives.

In reporting Dartmouth sons in the Class of '71 last month, I said that Jim Wood had a son in that class. I should have said that Don Wood was the father (son Jim). JimWoods has a daughter and no son as far as I know! My apologies to all the Wood(s). I know all of the Class joins me in congratulating Jim McFarland on his election to the presidency of General Mills, Inc. Jim has spent his whole business career with this company starting in 1934 after his graduation from Tuck. He worked in many areas of the company and was most recently executive vice president having been elected to that position in 1964. Best of luck, Jim, from us all!

Just as I was completing these notes, I received a most welcome letter from CalMilans which I'll share with you next month. See you at REUNION, June 17-18- 19.
