The varsity wrestling team continued to surprise, finishing seventh in a field of 24 contestants at the M.I.T. invitational held in Cambridge in late December. Captain Peter O'Keefe finished second in his weight division.

Resuming regular action, Dartmouth grapplers fell victim to an overpowering Brown squad which pinned the varsity 34-13, and the frosh 34-10. Junior Dick Neuhoff proved outstanding for the Green in Providence, pinning his man in the 145-pound weight division.

The next week the matmen bounded right back to upset potent Amherst 20-17, on the road. With Dartmouth hopes pinned on the final match, sophomore Ed Smith, second-string center on the varsity football team, won a decision over his opponent in the unlimited class to bring home victory.

Both varsity and freshmen now have an opportunity to display their talents in Hanover for the first time this season, on January 20, against always dangerous Springfield. Coach Quentin Currie must hope for a remarkable upset from his sophomore-laden squad, and he may get it.

The varsity and freshman indoor track squads open their seasons also on January 20, with Coach Ellie Noyes' squads hosting Cornell. Working with a combination of scattered veteran talent and a majority of sophomores, Coach Noyes expects to be stronger this season, especially since the squad has considerably more depth than a year ago. Captain Steve Atwood leads the distance runners, with help coming from juniors Dave Rouse and Mark Alvarez. Sophomores who may break into the lead are Earl McEvoy and Mark Hamilton. Senior Bill Bridge heads up the middle distances, also backed by two juniors in Dave Warner and Mark Upton. Soph star Tom Miller will press in these events.

More than anywhere else, Dartmouth should improve in the weight events. Sophomores Dewitt Davies and George Remmer should consistently score for the Green here. Defending indoor Heptagonal high-jump champion Chet Halka has returned from a term of foreign study in Spain and is pointing toward another fine season. Sophomores will fill out the squad in all events, and if they improve could give the Indians a surprise season.
